Hi Vivian,
I know what you are saying, but don't change your decision on acquiring this cultivator based on my observation. To be honest, I have not grown a fig variant that does not split after a heavy rain.
Usually if I am in town I'll employ a trick in preventing the figs from splitting. And that is- covering the top of the soil (plants in pots) with Polyurethane sheets (similar to Bill from Bill's figs or others who grow in SWCs). Rain will bounce off the poly. sheet and will keep the soil relatively dry. Last season I did not cover the NdC and couple of others on purpose to see if they would split or not.
Covering the top of the pots, also hasten the ripening period for the late ripening variants as well.
Navid.
