Noob from Columbus saying hey howdy!

Hi all!
Just wanted to jump in and say hi.
My figness story started way back in grade school in the 70's. I grew up in Nutley NJ and I loved the beginning of the school year because I would walk home and aways look for a ripe fig in our back yard. After my mom passed away my dad eventually remarried and moved to south Jersey. Before he moved, he asked if I wanted anything from the house and I immediately answered, moms fig bush.
I planted it here at my house in Columbus thinking the zones were close enough. Well it never produced a fig :).
Last year (after 20 years of a beautiful fig bush that grew lager every year but produced zero figs) I decided (after many good friends locally had a great fig crop) that I wanted to relocate my moms fig to a better spot in the yard (more sun and closer to the house). When my friends heard about my renewed excitement they gave me cuttings from a their trees as well.
So I have my moms planted on the south side of the house with two others in pots near it.
It does not look like any will be producing any figs this year but I'm excited about next year.
In the mean time my plan is to be here and read, read, read. and enjoy your ripe fig pics :)
If you think of anything I should be doing with my moms fig to help jumpstart for figs next year, I'm all ears...and eyes.
Rick
Oh and I have no idea what kind of fig bush my moms is, all I remember was the figs were purple when ripe. Hopefully next year I will have some figs and be able to match them with the glossary.

Welcome Rick.

Welcome! Your bush will need at least 8 hrs full sun to produce figs, that may be why it was barren all these years.

It should get at least that in it's new spot (fingers crossed)

Welcome, Rick.  Next year try the 'pinching' method.  Approximately every 24" of growth, snip off the leader on each shoot and it will push out new branches and encourage figs to produce/ripen sooner.  I've had great luck this year.

Welcome Rick!  Nice to have you here!

Suzi

Welcome Rick.  There's a good number of locals from the NJ, eastern PA and southern NY area on this forum, including some real experts.  You're in good hands here.
Jim

There are people seventy miles north of you who produce figs and people  up in greater Cleveland who do, so there is nothing stopping you.

Welcome to the forum Rick. Great intro !

Welcome to the forum Rick. I agree with Frank - you'll have a better chance of a ripe crop if you 'pinch' those shoots - especially the main one.

Howdy :)

Welcome!  Probably too late this year to do anything but get it ready for winter.  :)

Yes Columbus Ohio. :)
Thank you for making me feel so welcome too by the way

Jersey Strong! Even our fig trees!

Hi Rick, I'm an hr south of you. Welcome to the forum. I cant offer any advice. I have 1 tree, a chicago hardy that I almost lost last winter so no figs for me this year either. I am hopeful about next year though.

Welcome to the forum.  You'll find lots of great people here and interesting ideas to help get the most from your figs!

Hi BuckeyefigFreek,
Welcome and Good luck with your trees !
In which usda zone are you ?

Do you have space in a garage or in the garden for a greenhouse ?
Check the warmer outside wall of the house and protect your trees near that spot .

Welcome to the party! If you're looking for more varieties, I'd advise taking cuttings of the local plants that you know do well. Google says your Zone 5b/6a, so you are a little limited on hardy varieties that will still produce planted in ground. We can steer you in the right direction if you need suggestions.

I do have a detached garage for the three I have potted. One of them is a cutting from my mom's. I am definitely going to try the pinch idea next summer.
BTW according to the USDA site I'm 6a (most of Ohio looks to be 6a)

Welcome to the F4F Forum, home of hopeless fig addicts and hopeful fig collectors.  Tons of info here on growing in our climate, winter protection, and container growing that will apply to you.  The search function is your friend.  The pinned "Start Here" thread at the top has a lot of topics that are helpful to review for noobs and experts alike.  And this link on searching is one I have found very useful:

Thank you Ed
I read the "start here" thread like it was my job. :)

Welcome BFF, glad to have you aboard our wild figgy ride. The guys are here are the tops and will get you fruiting in no time...

Whoops.  My bad.  There's a Columbus, NJ not too far from me...and with all the talk of North Jersey and South Jersey I jumped to conclusions.  (I guess maybe your screen name should have been the dead giveaway!)
So, let me rephrase my previous post.
