Luke I'm in NE Philly, Rawnhurst section. I know there is practically a fig tree for every house in South Philly, but unfortunately it seems like most are all pretty common stuff. Lots of Brunswick. I'm sure there are some gems around there, but you have to go through an awful lot to find them.  You need to find out the origin of the tree. Some immigrants brought their own trees with them, those have potential. Mr Bissiri up near me is a good example. He has 2 varieties that he has been selling at his little plant stand for about 50 years started from scion brought over when he was a child. I understand he has a couple others too, but not sure of their origin. Haven't tasted his light fig yet, but the dark fig is excellent. Searching for unknowns is a lot of fun, but you do have to go through a lot of trees to find something different.

Where is the plant stand Barry? Does he have regular hours? I would like to check that out.

I am searching near the old chevy plant near Elsmere this summer.

I don't recall the exact address but I know how to get there. Didn't see anything on a search either. If you know where the Prison system is on Torresdale Ave in the NE it is in that vicinity

Not too familiar with the NE. I will get directions from you at some point, when I get a chance to head that way.

LOL, oh no I'm certain of the location, my ex works in the prison system

Sounds good, I would really like to try his dark fig since it gets such good reviews.

I lived in Manayunk for a while, I wish I was tuned into figs back then. We had bamboo in our back yard :(

For you guys and gals that go on fig hunts for interesting unknowns - do you simply cruise the old (immigrant) neighborhoods looking for trees in people's yards?  If that is your approach it occurred to me that it might be more effective to use the streetview feature of google maps to let your mouse do the walking.  You could cover an area fairly quickly and make an inventory of trees that could then be investigated in person later.  Of course you might miss small trees using this method but mature trees in the front yards should be easy to spot.  I just used this method to locate a fig tree that I knew the approximate location of in a DC neighborhood but not the exact address.

Happy Friday,
Steve

good to read that I'm not alone spotting trees when driving
