Not Fig Weather

Well we had nasty weather in the metro area by me were were a luckier as there is only about quarter to half inch of ice , some tree's suck as my evergreens and the 1 pussy willow are bent some. The dogs went slip sliding on patio as i opened door. Looks like i lost a small fig plant that i rooted and its brother is hurtin but might make it , i still have them under the grow light, these were sent to me as sticks which i then rooted and they started growing when repotted but dont know what happened as they just started wilting, my thinking was  i should have waited a little longer perhaps , 1 of the 2 the branches just shriveled up , the other started to do the same but stopped and its just staying that way but has several buds down the main that are still green so there is hope.

Ciao Martin, it is pouring rain here, suposed to turn to Ice.  New York is supposed to get a foot of snow in the City.  We may dodge the bullet here, with only rain, but this weekend another winter storm is supposed to hit.  Is the little fig you are talking about the Abruzzesi?  I need to chime in on a post posted a couple weeks ago about the fig from Abruzzi someone had.  I Meant to write but got side tracked.  Ciao Martin

Maggie the storm moved rather quickly off to the northeast. We were lucky with the sleet and not the snow except at illinois wisconsin border they recieved upwards of 10 inches , some of our evergreens are bent from the weight, our pussy willow tree i might have to cut down in spring it might have split at the base. Yes it was the abruzzesi that did not make it the other one might make it but and i should know in a few weeks as it has several buds that might open, the branches though are no more. I had 2 dark portuguese that i was able to root and sent one to my retired friend in missouri , he called and said they must have shook or tossed the box around as themain trunk had seperated from its root system which was very well developed, still the trunk had about 6 roots left on it with the biggest about 3/4 inch long so it still has a chance for him. I thought i had packaged it so well he would have a hard time unpacking it which was the case he said so i think it was post office problem but thats ok i can make more for him when the time comes.

Ciao Martin,  I have no idea what may be wrong with the little abruzzesi.  They are such good figs.  I know that when I rooted these, I did loose one. They are seeming to be a little finicky, but boy, when they do take off, they grow very nice and produce wonderful dark figs with such a wonderful sweet taste.  Let me know,  these are a prized family heirloom fig and i would hope they make it.  They at times may be finicky with being in such a cold environment.  I know the first year, I kept them Very warm when they were rooting as was told by my cousin. Even after they got potted up. I think they like alot of light as well.  If you have trouble, I will root one for you next year then send it to you, not saying you aren't doing good, but maybe it has been so close to us for so long, they don't like being away from the family?   In any account, you will get one in the next 365 days.  Did you try singing to them.  Believe it or not, my nonna used to say that even plants need talking and singing stimulation.  I talk to mine all the time.  Sing a song to them and see if that helps. In all seriousness, it may just take a little more time.  If the brother dies, just burn it or something.   Ciao Maggie

Maggie, i read somewhere long time ago that plants respond to noise , there was a study donr with music and plants but it was a while back i read somewhere just cannot remember what was said about it. The other one now has branch doing same thing but this one had several lower buds that might eventually do somethig time will tell. Its not the fig plant its my doing soething wrong, i figure some plants are harder to root than others , perhaps i should have waited till there were many more roots before the transplant. But time will tell .
I will keep you updated as time passes.
