Not the trendiest varieties,

but my favorite combo, even if I can't keep them in focus. Even though my Almas taste like root beer and my other figs are having bumper crops just loaded with sugar - this is the combo I wait for and eat for breakfast every chance I get.
Photoshop anyone.
Just wanted to share.
thx

Looks like the breakfast of champions. Thanks for the photo. Boy, I hope my Almas taste like root beer. I like root beer.

Looks great!

do alma's really taste like root beer?

One of my 5 year old Almas has figs this year that do have a strong hint of root beer. I'm very excited about it and will root some cuttings in hopes this season isn't a fluke.

Mine don't taste like root beer... if they did, I wouldn't have to share ;)

I love root beer so now ill have to try and get an alma just to see if i get lucky and it tastes like root beer
.

Hardy Chicago and Marseilles vs Black were the first figs I started from cuttings.  I had two HC yesterday.  They were good.

Oh boy, Rootbeer fig and vanilla icecream float! Grow, Alma, grow!

Do you water it with sarsaparilla root extract?

If I ate that for breakfast, I'd be on the crapper until lunch.  ;)

Bob,
I water with birch beer.
Scott,
They have never tasted like root beer before, but I have never left them on the tree so long either as I now have my bird problem solved. Only one of the two tastes like root beer - they are from the same supplier but produce different looking and tasting figs. I had a third that I sold but that one was from a different supplier.
Jason,
Figs just don't have that effect on me at all.

I will (obviously) take cuttings from this tree and make sure to grow a few out. There are only a few figs left on my Almas but I did have one this AM that did have a root beer hint. When I was told the Lemon fig trees I bought had a hint of butterscotch I was pretty skeptical, but am less so now.
Whatever - who knows . . .

Smith, Excel, Tacoma Violet, Pananas Purple, Don Fortis, Texas BA-1, LSU Black, Alma and English Brown Turkey are some non-trendiest varieties with amazing flavors!  And by the way, my Alma does not taste like root beer.  However, my Alma does have a great rich flavor that I like.

Thank the stars for Brown Turkey and Celeste, if a specific type blight like Dutch Elm Disease, were to ever take out these two, Texas would be mostly barren of fig trees.  These two trees are the foundation of our figs in Texas.

My opinion.

I am all about the root beer flavored fig but that would not be a breakfast fig. Ones like that I would try it for lunch or dinner.

Unfortunately I ate the last fig off that tree this AM. I can't wait til next year to see if it was just a fluke.
