Imagine that you only get to keep one fig tree in each category in your zone.

My Zone is 8a.

My number one fig tree in pot was Nordland.

My number one fig tree in ground was Col de Dame Blanc.

depends on what you mean by number 1. by taste, it was CdDB. but some others were very close with different taste note.

Hi Pete, I'm thinking Taste! You get to chose only one in pot and one in ground, if you have any in ground.

I have a lot I didn't get a chance to sample, so they don't count.

At a later date, perhaps we should add the results and name a winner in each category (Pot and Ground) for 2013.

I know that the results will not reflect the truth as many for example do not have Black Madeira.

It should be fun in knowing what people in general prefer when it comes to taste.

In addition if a fig is tasty then it should be healthy in the zone.

George, the final number might make the BT as an outlier. LOL

The problem with BT is that no one knows what it is or where it came from.

So no cheating unless you mention the source of your BT.

If you're looking for BT then the Laradek BT strain. Hands down.

My favorite as far as taste in 2013 was Weeping Black in a container. It had a spicy citrus flavor, which was a really nice surprise. I have it in the ground now. Close second was St. Rita, also in a pot. It tasted like mulberries. Both trees were small and produced only a single fig, so I have hopes for more this season.

Had too many excellent tasting figs last year like Gypsy, Yugo Yellow, Weeping Fig, O'Rourke, JH Adriatic, Dark Portuguese, Aubique Petite etc. Each had a unique taste profile but most friends repeatedly asked for Yugo Yellow.

I think Abicou or Albacor.
Though not certain.

@Chivas, does Colar split & do you get both crops ?

@ Sas, Yugo Yellow is a fig from Yugoslavia. I am sure it could be something else. Dusan brought it to North America. It is an excellent small yellowy fig. I think few fig friends have this variant. Its better tasting than many highly rated variants in my collection. The name Yugo Yellow was given by Dusan. Hopefully it can be id.

Could it be Col de Dame Noir? Since it is called Colar perhaps.

Rafed: If you think it's Abicou. Baud has other names for Abicou such as Aubique noire, San Piero.
Is Albacore another name for Abicou ?

I was thinking of giving away the Yellow Yugo but I am going to hold on to it now.
Do you have the Black Yugo? That's a keeper. Produces large dark figs.

I had posted a thread on my Colar a year ago but it looks like I may have deleted it.
I will post pictures of it this season.

Won't do good now while still dormant.

I was looking at a fig called Black Spanish. Unfortunately my plant died last year upon arrival from the nursery. I never bothered to replace it. 
Now you've got me thinking whether Black Spanish could also be the same as Abicou.

But in Pons book he has quite a few Albacor strains listed.

Last year was a tough year for me what with all the rain.  For taste in ground I would probably have to go with Celeste as best all around.  My potted varieties were all very mundane nothing stands out now and there were several varieties.  In their defense though we had all the rain and all were young plants.  I'm hoping for better this year.

Rafed, I don't have Yugo Black now. It is a large fig. Very good flavor but rupture easy. I
gave plant away last season. My tree came from Dusan. It is a hardy fig. Yugo Black
is also known as Sumadija Dusan. It came from the town of Sumadija, Yugoslavia. Likewise,
at one time I do not care about Yugo Yellow as it never ripen for 2 seasons. I got it as a tree. I
left it in its pot outdoor for 3 seasons with no winter protection & man, the taste is so good. Friends
enjoy this variant more over variants like Aldo, RdB, Lebanese Red(Marius), Paradiso, etc and would
ask for more. Fortunately it is a productive tree. I air layered 5 trees from my mother YY tree.

One vote for San Donato Black Unk from Calabria.
It has all the qualities we look for in a fig--vigorous, productive grower with a closed eye and taste that rivals Hardy Chicago.

Last year was my first year for Colar, i think the figs I had were late brebas so I do not know if I get both crops, I had a bunch of dieback on my tree this year (2 year old tree filled up 30 gallons pretty fast).  I am hoping to be able to get a main crop on it but we will see.  If this is the same Colar as the one Lampo has then I should get both.

My colar is not Col De Dama Noir, I have both and I bought both from Baud, he lists them separately and the leaves look much different.  The figs look much different as well.  It also is not Albacor either, I am not sure what other synonyms it may have but I believe this one would be the from Valencia, although I cannot be 100% certain of this.

Also, Sas please note Cuello de Dama and Col de Dama are different varieties in Spain.

Chivas,I wasn't sure if Colar was a name used in Canada. I did not see Colar advertised on Baud's Website. Perhaps it's an older strain.

Rafaelissimmo, I'm having issues when it comes to the right variety of Col de Dame. I have the French Baud strain, and at this time do not really know what sets them apart from the Spanish ones, nor know which one is better.
I only tasted the UCD Blanc so far which is outstanding , awaiting the Baud Noir and Gris hopefully this summer. If you tried the Spanish ones please tell us about those ones and how they compare to the French Varieties..

Cuello de Dama is mostly a fig for drying from what I understand. Am sure you are in great shape with Baud.

There really shouldn't be a difference between the French and Spanish CdD they are both native to bordering regions along the mediterranean sea, Catalunia (Spain) and Roussillon (France).

Mine all in pots. 2013 was Ischia Green, followed by Troiano Calabrese. Hoping for more of everything this year. The Troiano Calabrese is the only one showing breba right now.
