I am in NYC and my Chicago Hardy has broken dormancy from its slumber in a detached unconditioned dark garage. Sometimes the night lows are down to low 30s still. Should I chance moving it outside? It's really too big for me to shuffle it between inside and outside everyday..

No.  I would wait until May 1st if you cannot shuffle it in and out.

Open the door(s) and expose it to cold air.  Anything over 32 will be fine.  You want to slow down that growth as much as possible.

Usually my containers in NYC are outside by 4/1. My garage is also unheated, detached and not insulated. This is the first time my figs have broken dormancy inside the garage. Half of them have not been outside at all this season for precisely this reason: until I am sure the last freeze has passed, some 25 gal pots are just too heavy to lug in and out. I even see some plump breba on some varieties in the garage. I bet most will drop, the usually do.

I feel for you brother, but this is a cold spring so far...better safe than sorry for our northern friends. I remember snow on the ground untill sometime in may in Chicago...check the 10 day forcast for nightime lows if nothing else!

I have some in-ground trees in Boston that I uncovered two weeks ago. There was mold damage from the very warm winter we had, I don't regret opening them up. Now I just throw moving quilts over them at night if it's gonna be below 30. I believe that figs can take down to 28 degrees before there heavy die back. They are tough, they'll be okay. 

I went to the garage  yesterday to finally let out the figs... I couldn't believe it, the little one year old Carini (that I rooted last year from a twig) had 3 brebas on it! I don't know how that happens in the dark! And of course the potting mix was drier than dry! 

I had to move my figs out of the basement, as they were breaking dormancy and in some cases really leafing out. We often get frosts up to mid May, so I'm watching the weather like a hawk. I'm keeping a reserve of quilts and blankets, using micro-climates in my yard, and I will suck it up and move pots inside for a night if really imperative. I'm gonna have at least a few miserable days in the next month. Sometimes it can't be helped. Spring weather is pretty crazy in my neck of the woods, and warm weather came really early this year.
