Obtaining Quality Caprifigs

Hi All,

This is my first post and I guess I recently got bitten by the fig obsession bug. I have read through most of the basic literature on figs both on this website and generally on the interwebs. However, I am looking for more information about breeding figs specifically how to select caprifigs for breeding and more specifically how to obtain them. I looked around the forum but did not see any mention about reliable ways to obtain any short of foraging in the woods (of which we dont have much in DC). Any suggestions for literature or sources for obtaining caprifigs would be greatly appreciated

Steven,
Welcome to the forum!
Will you need the wasps too?
Caprifigs alone is not a problem ( non persistent) .

Greenfig,

Thanks for your response. I think further down the line I will probably play around with wasps so that is probably also some key information for me to store away. If you have any sources it would be greatly appreciated.

Right now I am a bit more interested in doing basic crosses between caprifig trees and persistent females (I understand I wont get Persistent females).

I guess the key bit of information i have not been able to glean is do caprifigs have their own unique names as separate from the persistent females such as in the repository that UC Davis has or are they also mixed into that lot as well?

The final question i guess is what are generally considered the top caprifigs and where can they be obtained?

Thanks and sorry for all the questions (and perhaps the ignorance of my question)

~Steven

Many caprifigs grow in a driving distance from me but they have no names, green and black . If you are interested , please shoot me a PM.
Francisco (lampo) once said that a green I found was mentioned in the literature.
Let me locate the link
