Spent some time talking figs with this lady, and bought her book. If anyone is vacationing in the Outer Banks ( OBX)  spend some time with this lady, she has been growing figs since the 1940s and her yard is covered with very nice productive trees. Quality time for me on my vacation for sure. She is right across the street from the lighthouse.

as a child I went with family on a vacation to Ocracoke Island.  Great memories, including finding a huge mission fig tree mulched by oyster shells. my first fresh figs

I stop there every year, very nice lady and a great island.

Her fig preserves are the best I've ever had.  They were made with "Lemon" figs.  Nice lady.

I've spoken with her. She is super nice. She tipped me to using oyster shells as mulch.

Nice story. reminder how easy we have it now.
I wonder how she kept the trees watered back in the day, a rain catchment system?

I had thought about using a clam shell mulch after seeing the Belleclare video a while ago.
Maybe I will collect some in the off season.
