October Figs

Figs are still ripening here in my part of Arizona.  Here are some photos and descriptions.

LSU Purple is a workhorse of a fig tree.  It grows like a weed and has been pumping out figs since June.  The figs are sweet but the flavor isn't that good.  I'm hoping this one will taste better in the future.  The birds like it though.

Hardy Chicago is starting to ripen a large second main crop of figs.  The flavor is very nice and the figs have a soft texture.

My unknown from NJ is still ripening figs that are tasty and soft.  Here is one that is starting to swell.  I ate a couple that were dead ripe earlier this morning before I took these photos.  It is very close to Hardy Chicago, but I still think it is a little bit different.

Violette de Bordeaux has been ripening a large second main crop for a few weeks now.  The figs are very sweet and tasty.  They are softer and juicier this time of year compared to the summer.  The birds love these figs too.

Great pictures. Sadly mine are done . :-(

FrozenJoe,
What a name for someone living in Phoenix!   What are your best figs here (as far as 1) taste 2) productivity?   I'm around here too.

Figs are still ripening here too, but we are 4 hours from you in the same climate zone.  Went to Home Depot today, and asked the gentleman in front if they had figs on sale.  He missed the on sale, part, and escorted me to Black Missions and Brown Turkeys in 3 gallon pots for $23.99 ea.  NOT on sale!  I asked what they do when the trees go dormant.  They throw them out.  They don't put them on sale.  Shoot!!

Nice to have a long growing season for sure!

Fignatic I've grown 13 different varieties out here.  A few of them died and I pulled a few more that I didn't like.  I'm down to 7 different figs right now.  My all around favorite so far based on productivity and flavor is the unknown that I have from NJ.  Second favorite is Violette de Bordeaux.  The trees are still young so things may change, but for the last two years those two have been the best.

Great looking trees, Joe.  I am just starting to get ripe main crop figs on some of my newer trees.  Not sure how long that's gonna last, as our nights are cooling down big time up here.  How's the temps down your way?  How long to you think you'll be getting  figs?

Hey Joe, does your Hardy Chicago have an open eye when ripe?

Dave, last year figs were ripening until the beginning of December.  But they didn't really taste that good past mid-November.  After that they weren't sweet and weren't really worth eating anymore.  I expect it to be the same this year unless we get some early cold weather.

Jason, on my Hardy Chicago the eye is usually open and small to medium in size.  But the center of the fig is solid so the eye doesn't go very deep.  On some of the figs it is closed.  It does vary.  But usually it's open and small to medium in size.  Is that what you've seen on your Hardy Chicago?

Still waiting for mine to fruit....

It is a very nice tasting fig in my opinion.
