Is there any reason for this to happen? This fig looks like it's blooming!

I have the same problem on a fig. I believe its just slightly inverted.

Basically the embryo is a little ka-ka. Not fully in but I believe it will ripen. Unfortunately it may allow insects to invade as it gets to maturity.

I have an Excel fig that has several of these figs on it. One started completely inside out. However, it has closed up as it has developed. I wonder if these figs could be pollinated by insects other than the fig wasp?

Maybe with a paint brush filled with pollen?

Brebas are not pollinated, they contain pollen though. At least that is what I think, or at least what I got out of the instructions for pollination that Bass posted a little while ago.

But speaking of pollination, I came across some info that suggests figs can be made to produce apomictic (clone) seeds when pollinated by mulberries or osage orange. I collected a bunch of osage pollen. If anyone would like to try this out, I will mail you some. I would like to get a few viable seeds in return if anyone is successful. Just send me a message.

My take on this.

The developing figlet 'somehow' did get  physically damaged when young...
The fig, being an 'inverted' composite-fruit, then gets highly distorted.
I had & seen-pics of figs with similar/worse non-normal  (funny/ugly) growth.
I do not think that this reflects bad on any particular fig-variant (specimen/name).
