and will like to mail me for postage, i will be thankful for it

George

Thank you in advance

rakgrape.com is a good site to buy from, theyre a little more expensive especially if youre just buying a vine or two but theyre huge and healthy bareroot plants compared to most of the dinky cuttings you get locally, and have a wide variety to choose from. I got a mars grape from them 2 years ago that has grown well and put out a couple clusters last year, something got to them before they ripened thought so I cant comment on the fruit

. There are some hybrids developed by Cornell university in upstate New York that should do well in our area. I'm still experimenting with a few varieties.

I have used these guys twice before. Nice size plants, Frank

I agree w/mnvikes, rakgrape is a good source.  If you want free, next winter put in an order to the germoplasm. Raintree is good also, you just really have to demand that you want your plants before they want to ship them for your area normally.

Example, every year I like to get my dormant plants in the first week of April. We still get a snow storm or two, but the plants arrive dormant so it's no big deal, they get tucked into their new homes and wake up as they should. On the other hand, if your plants show up in late May or even June, it's already hot and they have broken bud and are under stress from the get go.

For me, this results in a massive difference in the first years growth; which determines if they survive the following winter as well. In short, if you want to start grapes this year, you need to get an order in pronto.

I have always ordered cuttings from http://www.bunchgrapes.com/grape_varieties.html
Lon was the a long time nafex and CRFG member who bred many varieties of grapes. He passed away last year but his wife and son sell cuttings. Hope they still have them for sale.

George, I live in Norwalk CT and have Marquette grapes that are 2 years old. I am moving in June to a larger property. You are welcome to come and take them while they are dormant.

I got cuttings of a few different muscat grapes from the Rombough's (bunchgrapes.com) this year, they are a great source and still selling cuttings. If they do well I'll have way more than I can use and will probably offer the extras up to folks here. One of them is seedless.

Another great source for grapes is http://www.doubleavineyards.com/. Especially for grapes for Ny. They sell the Cornell grapes along with tons of others.

One note about seedless grapes is that the berries tent to be smaller than what you see in the store. Store bought grapes are girdled or sprayed with hormones to make them bigger. Lom Rombough covers some techniques home growers can use to get bigger berries with out resorting to such measures in The Grape Grower. It's a great book if you are at all interested in growing grapes

If any one has any of the following would love to get some cuttings in November. Himrod, Neptune, Interlajen and Elvira types of grape cuttings.

If interested. I am also on the backyardgrowersboard.

I recommend Canadice red seedless grape.  I got this variety from Miller Nurseries in upstate NY in March 2012 and it is fruiting for the first time.  It's very sweet but with a more complex/grapey flavor than what I am used to eating from the store.  I had to bag the bunches with ziplocks to keep the birds at bay. I have a grape comment I was thinking about sharing, and since a grape thread came up..what better time.

I have/had a Vanessa grape that is 2 yrs old. Well, it is really probably 3 years old because I got it as a small dormant plant last spring and not as a cutting. Anyway, it grew well last year and I trained it some. I pruned it in late winter and minimal winter die back was observed. By time the buds started to appear in the spring somehow die back had progressed to about 1/2 the plant, but none the less those buds grew well and everything looked good and grew well until about 1 weeks ago. Out of the blue after work when I got home I observed that all the leaves were wilted in a bad way, more than a little heat stress. The vine gets watered once or twice a week depending on weather and has been fine, even through very hot streaks with no sign of stress, sickness, or disease. 2 days later the vine is dead.

I am thinking some sort of borer grub low on the main trunk, but there is no visible sign of borers.  I don't spray chemicals so it's not that. I haven't fertilized it so were good there. My neighbor on that side is a worthless (use your favorite explicit) who does yard care 2-3x/year so I was pretty sure he didn't spray the chest high weeds he calls a back yard; a peak over the fence confirmed that all the thistle and milkweed is still growing great among the dog s**t.  So I am not sure what to think, I have never had a established grape vine experience sudden death. I think my only course of action is to let it be and hopefully it will sprout some new growth from the base or roots.

Any thoughts? Ever happened to you?
