I'm looking to buy one tree for my father, this is what I've found , any suggestions? which one would you pick ?For zone 6b Does persimmon trees need to be covered in the winter? I'm looking to buy a 6 feet to 7 feet tall
I'm partial to the native ones (diospyros virginiana). Then again, the Asian ones I've had were from the market so its hard to give a fair assessment. You also loose the fun of spitting a seeds with the Asian ones.
1 and 2 are non-astringent, Hachiya is. You have to decide which one suits your taste before buying. They are all good by the taste (but I dont know much about the zone 6b)
Your dad's a wee bit too cold to just pick out any old persimmon. I suggest that you go to One Green World and get Nikita's Gift or find the other russian american-asian hybrid, rossenyanka or something like that.
Jiro should work, the other two will be alright but are border line. I know hachiya has done well for Maryland. It did die back for me here in pa.
