Off topic - rooting Mango?

I got some Mango cuttings that are now just sitting in the water. I've heard that the mango cutting is very hard to take root this way. Are there any other way to root these cuttings other than leave it in the water like this? Should I treat it like fig cutting?

suggestions welcome!!

Thanks,
Anya

Hi Anya. I've never heard of rooting Mango from hardwood cuttings. You might be able to root newly lignified greenwood (current season's growth but hardened off) using a mist system or some similar home spun method.

When I lived in S. Fl, the only propagation method I heard of for Mangoes was grafting or to grow them from seed. You could store your Mango cuttings until you're able to graft onto a Mango rootstock. I wouldn't suggest storing them in the fridge since it's a tropical species.

If you do store them, here would be my suggestion. Clean them. Dry them thouroughly. Wrap them snuggly in plastic wrap (saran wrap). Zip them up in a ziploc bag and store them in a cool, dry place. They should store for months in your home like this.

I could be wrong about getting your Mangoes to root like fig cuttings. So hopefully someone will set me straight if that's the case.

Anya,
I don't see much online that indicates mango scion can be rooted like fig (via water or soil)...appears grafting is it.   You may be able to find a nursery (I think there is one in Florida) that could graft for you???
Here is a link to mango propogation, it has info about seed germination:  http://university.uog.edu/cals/people/PUBS/MANGO/Mg05300.pdf

Yea that's what my dad told me too but I said I'll try! Thanks all!

Reading the info Sara gave me and felt so hopeless - 6-10 years to bear fruit from seed? ouch!! if it survive the cold!

Sara, I'll send you some, see what you can do with it. Thanks Bill for the advise of how to store them.
