Oh Gno!

I was setting up a new rooting box.  Using a new bag long fiber sp moss from Lowes, which was as dry as grandpa's heels.  Added some water and was squeezing it out when something flew out of it.  Either a very large gnat or a small fly.  God I hope it was a fly.  I nuked the whole thing just to be safe.

I had started another box a few days ago from the same bag.  I'm going to have to keep a close eye on it over the next week or so.

 That's too bad but the good side is you are now aware and en-garde.  I hted to throw away some Root Riot cubes that didnt work for fig cuttings, so I planted some tomato seeds in tham.  I think they had gnats in them and saw some hanging out around the seed tray. UGH!  ..  Don't laugh, but this really works for me.  I put dabs of nail polish a  few tags and stuck them in the tray,  whooosh gnats all gone.  The nail poilsh stopped the gnats instantly in my fig cups earlier this month too.  I reapply it once a week just to be sure.  It just takes a few dabs on, the rim of the cups or a tag.

What is the brand of nail polish?  I am willing to try your trick, but I have some organic stuff, Spa Ritual by Orly, and it might not have the kick of Revlon or some other brand.

Suzi

Well manicured figs!!!

Since the solvent in nail polish is ethyl acetate, there may be something to that.  This same solvent is used as an insecticide and even for entomologists to collect and preserve insects.  It seems like a good idea.  Ethyl acetate is also not that bad (relatively speaking)environmentally, either.  That is an interesting find.

All I know is that when my wife and/or daughter does 'something' with thier nail polish stuff;
I could hardly breathe (it stinks), I guess fungus gnats feel the same way - for a change!

with my luck, they'd just come back wearing gas masks..
