Old Brooklyn Italian... Fuhgeddaboudit!

Anyone have info on Old Brooklyn Italian other than what's on Jon's Variety Database?  History? Size?  Flavor?  Google search doesn't return much of anything either.

I have Italian Purple fig cuttings I've rooted. They came from an older Italian guy in East Hanover NJ. He said brought cutting from Italy however Ill have to stop by to get more details on where specifically they came from.

Thanks Rich.  I'm looking specifically for "Old Brooklyn Italian".  From Jon's Variety Database:

[A] mature, very strong and incredibly fruitful fig tree which was transplanted in Brooklyn NY from Italy approximately thirty years ago. Every season this tree easily yields 1500 figs and that number continues to increase every year as the tree continues to mature and rapidly grow in height. Approximately six years ago the tree trunks were cut down to approx 12" and since that time the tree has grown so rapidly that it is now almost 20 feet tall and yielding approx 1500 sweet figs every season beginning in June. The fig bulbs grow green and then mature to a soft juicy sweet deep purple in color. They generally range in size from approx 2" to 3" in thickness.

Looking around even more, I see people on eBay selling cuttings using Jon's description!  Does anyone have any info on what variety it may be or who collected?

I have rooted cuttings from last year but no fruit yet, sorry. Here's a link to info on this forum.

Hi Rhonda.  Thanks for the reply.  My 'Old Brooklyn Italian' is from you.  It's doing great!  Leafing out very well in an SIP.  It appears to be a strong grower and I started wondering what to expect from it.  Where did you get yours from?

By the way, how is Sweet Diana doing?  Did the cuttings recover from the freeze?

Danny, The Sweet Dianna are still in the fridge. They actually seem like they may be okay. I got the Old Brookyln from Ebay. I needed practice rooting so I bought a dozen or so. They rooted well and are strong. I hope it wasn't just beginners luck!

Mine came from Jon last year.  It's a 2' tall tree.  More to come this summer.

Danny, that unknown Sweet Diana is growing well for me - one of the two most vigorous out of the  ~15 varieties I'm currently hatching.

Ed, you're going to love it.

Jon, maybe you can shed some light on 'Old Brooklyn Italian'.  Where did yours come from? Any idea what variety it could be?

Hey guys just discovered this forum thread.  I too am a NYC native.  My grandfather brought over 2 fig trees and 1 persimmons tree nearly 30/40 years ago. I do not know the specific variety either of the trees are but they fruit like crazy in the summer.  But with our last insanely brutal winter all 3 of the trees took a lot longer to develop this year.  Cheers from a native NY'r I would love to try that "Old Brooklyn" variety because it sound exactly like mine. ; )

I wonder how many varieties the Italians brought over

Well, Wikipedia says there were more than 5.4 million Italian immigrants to the US. If 0.1% brought a fig with em or sent back to Dad or an Uncle to send one over, that's still a lot of figs :)
