On Naming Figs

Thanks Brent.

I meant all the synonyms Condit assigned, maybe I am confused though, variety names confuse the crap out of me. I should admit I have not read all of Fig Varieties: A Monograph.

Well those "unique" names did not show up like I thought, maybe it takes a little time. I am no expert. I see how lame Dom's Hero looks now, sorry bout that.
Another thing to consider is that F4F search function does nor hit on three letter words, like red. So naming a fig 2nd st. Red or unk. Big Red would make it invisible here.

My Big Fat Greek Red Fig! That would show up! LOL

People who lose their memory are given temporary names ( Jane doe ) till someone figures out who they really are . Why are they not just given a number ? Hey Mr. 143-36 how are you today ?
You get no meaning out of a number .But Hardy Chicago tells me something ,and so does Joe's Jersey until maybe one day it is recognized as an existing variety . Until that day I am more than happy to use the name that is given by the person who is sharing his/her find with the rest of us .

At what point do we drop a temporary name?

For example:
Adriatic = Chico Strawberry, Ventura
Falls Gold = Alma
Green Ischia = Verte
VDB = Negronne
Kadota = Dattero
Lattarula = Italian Golden Honey, Italian Honey
Mary Lane = Jelly

You should be getting the picture by now.
At what point do we pick a "Primary" name and then drop using the other aka's all together?

Maybe we can start weeding out all the duplicate names, asking Jon to pick a primary name and make note of it on Figs4Fun variety information page.

Here's my example:  Mary Lane = Jelly
Mary Lane will be my "Primary" name and under Jelly - there will be a notation "Now known as Mary Lane" with no description or information.

To simply this whole mess, we must start using a universal name and get away from having multiple names actively being used for the same fig, especially if we know its the same fig.

One problem that cannot be avoided is there is no regestry for figs the AOS American Orchid society or any one of the other many societies out there have a regestry all spiecies have a name and all crosses have a name and if they don't have a regesterd name they are simply seedlings.
I have hundreds of one of a kind daylilies that I have bred but they are still just seedlings same with dogs if it is not regestered with the AKC its a mutt.
Figs have been around for too long for this to work and without the stucture of a society figs are dommed to confusion and in my opinion that is the only thing not fun about figs.

Until you DNA test every tree in the country, you will never know which ones are the same and which are different. And only then can you begin to decide which name to use for each variety. The you have to notify everyone what the "correct" name is for their tree, so that they can then pass on correct information when they hand out cuttings.

I just wanted to add that... For seedlings, I don't see a point in assigning an unknown prefix or suffix. It is nice to include in the notes what it may be a seedling of, if known though. It would be great if we could figure out some code to indicate something strarted as a seedling though.... Like an asterisk after the name or a dash or plus sign or something.

Jon out of curiosity do you know how much DNA testing costs?

I do not know what DNA testing costs, At $100 per sample, it would cost me well over $100,000 to test my collection.
