one more thing i noticed.

not knocking off the figs on 1st yr trees. it seems this cause slow growth. comparing to last yr's cuttings, this yr's cuttings didn't do as well. one thing i didn't do was knocking off figs. just didn't get around to it.

thanks. i never did that, but now i shall.

It's so hard for me to do.

Usually i knock them all off along with good doses of fertilization to get growth for its first season and enjoy the figs from other plants.

I've read that all young trees producing figs for the first time should have all figs pinched off so that all the tree's energy will go into the growing of a good root system.  The roots are more important than the figs.

After trees are established, allow some figs to develop, but thin out the main-crop figs until trees put on some age, and growth.

Rewards usually follow within three years, from cuttings.  For the bigger air-layers...use your judgement.

Roots first...figs will follow.

martin, it seems this winter will be cold. it's been awhile since nc had temp down to below 20 in nov.

frank,

i usually knock off all the figs first yr and allow figs on second and on. this yr, i just didn't follow my own practice due to too many things going on. most of the trees look fine, but i can tell some could have used more energy toward the vegitative growth. roots seem to have done well.

I don't know pete I didn't knock the figs off the cuttings I put out in ground this year and all of the trees grew to four foot tall, well branced and out of all the figs I planted my best tasting this year came off of a fist year sal's g.

dave, i grow mine in containers :) maybe in ground tree take it better.
