only 1 fig in 30 cuttings... actually 4...

so spent all afternoon moving persimmon, pom, and mulberry cuttings into cup. i didn't root them first. i scrape and scored and used clonex. will see if they come out with roots. i know persimmons are usually grafted to root stocks. i'm hoping this works too.

all of them received hot water bath last night and stayed in the water until i processed and put rooting hormone on. then went straight to 50/50 perlite and seedling soil.

USDA/UCD figs cuttings will be processed tomorrow in more traditional way.. baggie to cup to 1 gal. no rooting hormone for the figs.

4 fig cuttings in the pix are Unk Pearl Harbor and Celeste JW. Unk Pearl Harbor did great in the baggie, but due to lower temp now days, it didn't put roots once in the cup. but i noticed roots coming to the top today. Celeste JW is the only one with leaves.

no birky in the house x)

if you look very carefully, there is Bing Cherry cutting in there somewhere...

Hi Pete,

Where did you find the grids for the bottom of your totes?

james,

that's actually overhead light diffuser. i think i got that at either lowes or HD. had to cut to size.

Thanks for the tip about the overhead light diffuser (aka eggcrate lighting panels)!  I had been wondering about your grates as well.

They're cheap, too: Google tells me I can get a 2' x 4' panel for under $15.

Pretty sweet Pete. I hope the persimmons root for you. Are they American Persimmon varieties? I'll be grafting some Asian Persimmons on American rootstock soon.

Thanks Pete,

I was planning on using stucco lath on the bottom of the totes and as a floor in my hydroponic containers.

Why do you need the grids in the bottom? I have cuttings in a container with no grid, should I race out and get one?

the idea is to elevate the cups off the floor of the bin so they don't sit on the pool of water after watering. and possible air circulation to the drain hole on the cups.

got bored so processed Vernino and Dauohine cuttings and out them in the baggie. it seems USDA/UCD Dauphine is san pedro type. not much info on that one. still have Nazati to process.

What kind of persimmon are you rooting?
I just planted a 6 ft bareroot ichi ki kei jiro, hoping itll grow

Thanks, Pete. I'll guess I'll find some grid thingy in my house somewhere.

travis,

i'm trying to root Tam Jam and Ichidagaki. i know they are usually grafted on to root stock and rooting doesn't work to well. i didn't realize that root stock can be purchased. if it fails to root, i think i'll get some root stock next yr and play with grafting.
