Has anyone purchased from WellSpring Gradens on eBay??? I'd like to add a few figs to my group, and these seam to be rather affordable. Any experience? Just wondering how reliable hey are. I've had good luck with their fig plants. Just be aware that they use tissue culture for propagation, and so the plants will be generationally young and very small when received... resulting in a longer period before fruit production. Only one plant that I received out of a dozen was delivered without leaves and with a sticker on the pot reading: "dormant". If you have the room for them, wouldn't hurt. Personally I wish I read more about TC's before buying them, not the fastest growers or producers. This'll be my second summer with mine, 7 total and only one produced any figs last year (Olympian) but nothing to write home about. Comparing them to my rooted cuttings that aren't that much younger, rooted cuttings look healthier. And I know I'll get figs from those, I've heard some TC's might take a couple years to produce. __________________ Simon C. So. I got a couple Hardy Chicago form them, good stuff. Also, my TC experience has been good so long as the little plants are treated delicately until they become more robust. I killed a couple by over-watering. Maybe I was just really lucky with the TC plants, but here is how some of them did. On 5 trees (3 Negronne, 1 Olympian, 1 Mission variant) I got maybe 50-100 figs in the first year, with the Mission variant producing absolutely nothing. __________________ Wish list: Galicia Negra, Violetta, Violette de Sollies, Dan_la's Black Beauty 10, Craven's Craving, Most important: YOUR FAVORITE FIG. A lot of people put emphasis on popular/exotic cultivars, which is great because it highlights some of the better fig varieties; however, I am most interested in the figs our members love regardless of pedigree. Currently Growing: a bunch of varieties.

I recieved 4 of their figs as gifts. Hardy Chicago, Green ischia, VDB, and Celeste. They have all been super good growers but so far no figs. Hardy Chicago and VDB were the most vigorous so far. However, i made a newb mistake of planting them in their little biodegradable pots and they took forever to start really growing. __________________ USDA Hardiness Zone 8, Central Texas Fig `till the End!

I had bought 7 petite negras that were 4-5 inches tall with the diameter of a toothpick. It was very hot here when I got them. They grew well under a big mesquite tree canopy. The one that was planted in ground grew very well should fruit this year. These were my first Figs that I had purchased and the rest is history.

As long as you read up on TC plants and understand the drawbacks, WellSprings is good. I have a Strawberry Verte from them, now will be it's 3rd year and I expect some fruit. How much we shall see. But it has been a healthy grower. __________________ Zone 7b (Central Arkansas) Seven trees in the ground: Hardy Chicago, Celeste(?), LSU gold, Italian Black, Southern Brown Turkey(?), Strawberry Verte, and Unk yellow. Trees in pots: VdB, CdD, and Sicilian?

The biggest drawback is some varities will not be correct, the biggest plus is they prpogate less infected strains... ( if you are in league with the evil army of Lumpers, this is a non issue. ;) ) You can order directly from their website BTW. My experience with wellspring gardens was positive with no losses ( 2 Tx everbearing figs, 4 "delicious" muscadines) despite sitting at the post office an extra 4 days untill I picked up the tiny plants. __________________ West Florida (West of the Apalachiola River as defined by the proclamation of 1763). zone 8a winters can get cold for figs...down to 12 F twice in last four years. Sorry to her your Olympian is such a slow grower. Mine grows like a weed and makes great fruit. Here 4 years ago appeared racks of small fig trees at the nurseries. One could buy one small tree for 8€. Those little trees were in 6cm6cm pots / 2"2" and were some 5 toothpicks emerging from the center of the pot. They were not labeled as anything regarding propagating method. It is now obvious to me that they are/were TCs . Those kind of fig trees have disappeared now or at least are no longer so industrially displayed ... I haven't seen them in the last 2 seasons (third season with this year). Well, my "madeleine des deux saisons" is 3 full seasons old, and I haven't seen a figlet. I bought a "goutte d'or" from the same racks, and it produced figs after 3 complete seasons, showing figlets at the end of the second season. I now go for trees at 20€ a pot. They clearly look like a rooted branch (a cutting). I try to select Grey wooded branches, But had to buy my "noire de Caromb" as a green 1 meter (3') tall, middle finger thick, rooted branch. Sometimes, you have to buy what you can reach ... and not dream on things you'll never see with your own eyes ... __________________ ------------------------ Climate from -25°C to + 35°C Only cold hardy figtrees can make it here

small but nice plants. slow growing although they are close to me they do not allow you to go there and buy plants directly some excuse about insurance.

It's funny it seems to be one or the other. Either the tiny TC fig trees grow like nuts or they hardly grow at all. I got a DK and a banana from Wellspring in the fall before last, I kept them in the sun room all winter and they didn't grow much but stayed out of dormancy. Last summer the banana grew well in a pot, but the fig only grew to about 10 inches and thinner than a pencil. It does look like the fig is bursting out of dormancy strongly this spring though and I am expecting a good year of growth from it, but no figs of course. __________________ Calvin Littleton,CO z5/6 Wants List: For everyone to clean-up after themselves and co-exist peacefully.
