Good evening lady and gents

My UC Davis Cutting just arrived

Ischia Black
Col De Dame
Excel
Black Maderia
Panachee
VDB

YEAH!!! Congrats and have a ton of fun with them.

Congrats! Those are very nice varieties!

Thank You.  I am pretty excited about them.  I forgot I ordered them!  I will be getting them prepped and ready for rooting tomorrow.

Those are excellent varieties.  Congratulations.

Mine came yesterday. Mostly numbered varieties I haven't tried yet.

The close up shows A1 133, which actually is 10 different seedlings from the same fig, from Croatia, or thereabouts..

A1 133 is the "name" for these 10 seedlings, which are known as DFIC0164-1 through -10. Number 2 has apparently been lost. DFIC stands for Davis and Ficus. (Prunus cuttings would be DPRU, etc.) 164 is the Accession Number. These cuttings came from WEO (Wolfskill Experimental Orchard) and is orchard tree position A-10-4. A lot of info packed onto that little tag.

Shawn,
Did you set up a shipping or FedEx account before ordering? Just curious, I didn't see anywhere to enter that info on the order form.

Calvin........If I remember correctly..You have to setup your FedEx account first.  I then added the account number in my e-mail with order form

pit.   What method will you be using to root your cutting?  I am thinking for myself Spagnum Moss in plastic container.

Shawn...good luck with your cuttings...you picked really nice ones.

This year was my first year of collecting fig cuttings. So I sent a request to UC Davis for three types of figs not knowing what to expect. About a month ago, I received 3 cuttings of Yellow Neches, 3 cuttings of Col de dame and one cutting of Black Madera. My Black Madera has leaves on it and two of my col de dame appear to be doing ok. The yellow Neches still needs to show signs of growth as I placed them in a self watering container and making sure that they get the humidity they need. I also purchased Violette de bordeau from a nursery after reading that it comes among the top three for taste.

When I sent for my Col de Dame cuttings at UC, It did not say if it is Black or White or grey. I'm hoping that they sent me the black one.

Congrats! Wish I have them someday!

I like how they sent you the tips.

The Col de Dame from the USDA at Davis will be Col de Dame Blanche

Thank You Jake for clarifying what I received.

This afternoon I decided to plant the Black Madeira and the Col de Dame blanche into the ground and ran a small irrigation line to them.
I'm using a 2 gallon drip irrigation hooked up to my garden faucet. I have it running for 5 minutes every other day for now. The spot gets full sun. The third picture is of my Violette de Bordeau which has been in the ground for about two weeks now. It looks like it's doing ok for now. These trees are about 12 feet apart. I hope they make it. The chicken wire is to protect the trees from Bugs Bunny.

I'll snap a picture when I get my first fig!

Hi Daniel,

The mice are a bigger problem for small trees and you should use something to keep them away. This wire will not stop rats.

========I'm finding out that rooting figs has an element of luck involved. About a month ago I purchased 5 cuttings of violette de bordeau on eBay, 2 went crazy and the third picture above  is of one of them.
I'm still waiting for the other three to show signs of life. It might take a while. This past winter someone gave us two fig branches that he put in black soil inside a pot. One of them made leaves as if it had roots and kept going. The other one looked dead and I was about to give up on it. This week it sprouted from under the sand and looks very alive.
The first picture is of the first fig that I planted in the wildernesss (No irrigation) and still doing well and the second is about two month late and still sitting on my porch and looks like it's coming back.

Don't give up just keep the cutting in plenty of light but not direct sun until it takes off.
