Ordering UCD Figs

A question for those of you who order fig cuttings from UCDavis.

Do you get any kind of response when you send in a request?  Do you get an email reply?

I went thru the process of getting a UPS account, then saw that UCD wanted all requests sent in by Email, so filled out the form and emailed it.  I also typed in "Please ship UPS ground"

What now, Coach?  Do we just wait and hope that it went thru and that someone will send us a little box of cuttings?

I had followed up my order with a couple of email questions and a request for confirmation that they had received my request. I did receive a response (see pertinant portions below) but I doubt that they send out a routine confirmation.

UCD response:
Thank you for your note. We received your plant material request below. All winter orders for dormant cuttings will be shipped in February/March 2010.

Thank you for providing your shipping account number; we appreciate any effort to help offset our shipping costs.

Depending on the availability of the items in your request, it could be approximately $10-$15.00. The charge is by weight/size of box and destination. We will use 2-day shipping for winter dormant cuttings and that is less expensive than priority.

Yes, request a confirmation. I had never had a problem when sending in a paper request. My e-mail request (and some from other people, as well) got lost last year.

I submitted the order to Bernie Prins, per the instructions below the order form download page. In the body of the email, I simply stated, "Please find and confirm attached request for plant material", along with a "thanks for everything you do!" (because I seriously appreciate it!!).  I noticed that there is another "orders" email (OrdersNCGR.Davis@), which is posted somewhere at a higher level of the UCD germplasm repository site.  I also notice that my order confirmation responses came from this email address, along with all subsequent communication.

About 3 weeks after my order, I got a confirmation email from someone at UCD along with my actual order # and a 'thanks for footing the bill on shipping'

Just a friendly note:  your spam filter on your email may catch the confirmation email as spam - you never know. This is something to think about though, or, if possible, set your spam filter to allow delivery of all emails from anyone "@ars.usda.gov"

When I found that they had Verino and I totally missed it, and Vernino is something I've never seen online, I'm sure it was a burden for them, but I emailed the person who confirmed my order and requested "please please please add Vernino to my order, I'm a blockhead and forgot it!" They were kind enough to oblige. Very gracious.
One other thing to note is to see on the page where you download the order form, it specifically says to email to "Bernie Prins", and this is what I did. I have seen some people in GW posts talking about the "Email Howard Garrison" link at the bottom of several pages. From what I can tell, Howard is not the person you're supposed to email your order to.

I am anxious for February!

Thanks, Guys:
I'll rest easier now.
