Orphan fig

Hi Folks,

I am pretty new to fig collecting, but have obtained a modest amount of very fine varieties. A gardening friend who is aware of my growing fig addiction acquired several fig trees from a friend of hers. Among them was one marked Orphan and she gave that to me. Initially I thought due to the name that this tree was probably a lost tag tree and is actually some other named variety, but the grower told my friend that it is indeed a named variety and comes from UC Davis. Can anyone offer any more details?? Fruit color, taste, growth of the tree etc?

Thanks,

Barry

Took more pix two weeks ago, in Orange County, CA, and also at USDA / UC Davis this week, and will get them posted this Fall, as time permits.

Thank you Bass and pitangadiego. At least I have an idea of what the fruit will look like and you've confirmed that it is indeed a named variety. Pitangadiego, how would you rate the taste? Ease or difficulty of growth?

Thanks,

Barry

Don't recall - was time-crunched to get the pix done.

Ken Love rated the taste a "4" on a scale of 1 to 10 last year.  See http://www.hawaiifruit.net/figtastescale.xls or http://www.hawaiifruit.net/figtastescale.htm

Hi Harvey,

Thanks for the fig taste scale, very interesting!! I haven't seen anything as detailed as that before with the various qualities of fig fruit per variety being rated. Pretty neat stuff!! I see that ther are some varieties ranking pretty high that would be expected to do so and others are surprises to me, not knowing much about them. For instance, Black Madeira is highly esteemed for fruit quality by just about everyone, but I did not know Ischia White or Panachee for example was rated so high in taste. I suppose it depends also on the taster too! Who is Ken Love?
