OT: another round of "snow" in Nc

strudeldog, sorry to hear/see that. I remember that area from a couple weeks back. Hopefully there is enough trunk and roots remaining for regrowth.

Thanks Mike,

Some that just got brushed might be salvaged, but with several after training some of these for as many as 15+ years it hurts. The structure of the tree is gone. You don't just prune Japanese maples you train them more like Bonsai.  The one just to the right of the the trunk that got missed. a Aka shigitatsu sawa  that was in a 45 Gal. pot prior to my moving last year. There are about 3 real nice trees that took direct hits. Couple other I will have to assess.  If that tree were a few feet taller  my wife's van would have got hit. It's worth less than the maples and covered with insurance. I doubt anyone here is wondering why both Vehicles setting out. That detached garage is full of plants mostly figs.

Man, I am really sorry to hear that. I know how it hurts to lose a prized tree or anything else you have worked so hard and long
on.

@strudeldog
Sorry for the Japanese Maples mishap.
Love those hardy decorative summer/fall trees.
I have a few old ones growing in pots on my deck.
The branches are rather brittle and trees do like random breakage.
In a few years they will recover and be nice again.

ouch. sorry to hear about your japanese maple trees.

Thanks Mike, George, Pete,

Yes they are just trees. If someone had got hurt I would not even be thinking about them. Funny how a issue can become small when real tragedy strikes. I measured that tree a much easier task now that it is horizontal.  36 paces and my step is a good 3 feet so well over 100 foot Oak tree.  If that had hit my house it could have sliced it in 2.  I have 3 trees that will not be worth salvaging. A  Tamukeyama, Skeeter's Broom, and a Shishigashira. The Shishigashira was one of my most prized. It’s not that rare but a work of art I have had  since the mid-90s. My Japanese Maple collection as well as fruit growing was a major reason for my move.  I had run out of in ground planting space for maples years ago, and had well over 100 potted JMs that needed a home in the ground.  Unfortunately this was a focal point along my driveway where I have placed some of my most prized specimens.

Hey strudeldog- I am sorry to hear about your Japanese maples

Hi Strudeldog,
Well, why didn't you pinch the big tree ? ... Sorry, I just couldn't resist !

But jokes apart, I still think that I would never allow one of my trees to go to those heights.
3 meters is enough . Imagine one hits the house while you sleep ... No way for me ...

Thanks Zach,

JDSFrance,

There is really no "allow" involved here. That tree was probably large before I was born. It comes with living in the woods. They are either cleared out when building or leave them as they stand. none that size are within reach of my house. My last house  had trees surrounding it, never relaxed with winds or ice. Restless nights

Thanks for asking Gloria. I am ok. In my area, we have 12 inches of snow. Last night it was sleeting and my 12x 12 canaopy on my deck came crashing down. I have 3, 15gallon fig trees under it. The ice was too much and it came crashing down. I had placed a long 4 foot tall table in front of it. When the canopy fell, the table kept it off my trees. I had to go out and remove the ice and snow off the roof top of my GH. Then at noon today, the power went! Yeap, no power. Had to fire up the generator.....took me 30 minutes to get it started. Hasn't started in 8 yrs!!! Once started, I plugged in my fridge and cell phone and router.

Here are a few pics of the figs....unprotected!

Fired up the generator

And THEN, it was PLAY TIME!!!!!!!

Despite, the power was out, the ice and snow destroyed my gazebo canopy,-----the only thing I could do was enjoy the snow and have fun!!!

You're never too old to have fun and enjoy life!

dennis,

looks like you are having fun :) hope the power get back on quickly, and those trees are not damaged too bad. it dumped on us pretty good last two days, but not much damage here.

Hi All , being in vermont we have  so much snow  that we dont even notice a ft of snow, right, No, we might get 8 jn tonight but all winter long we have seen the snow stay south of us. Its been bitterly cold, 900 $ in frozen water lines later and I have no idea how my figs 100  trees, are doing in my rootcellar . so it has not been a good winter. I cant wait for spring .Rex.

Rex, it is rare that we get this much snow! Really rare.

two days of snow.. all gone in 4 hrs of sun and 60 degree temp.. i love north cackalacky.

Did spend a couple of hours shoveling slush and ice off the drive....it was really cool looking... hope my new persimmon survived... we didn't loose power here which I was glad for since we don't have a back-up
Looks like you made the best of it Dennis, I would have too but my kids took my gloves, and my boots...crocs don't work in the snow..

freezing rain predicted this afternoon. school is letting out at 11:30. oh joy.. and they extended school yr to end of june. i wouldn't mind it so much if the reason for the extension was to educate the kids, but i know they are just going to watch ton of rated g movies.

Just a weird winter everywhere. We are supposed to have a high temp of 70 today, followed by 25 degrees overnight. The poor plants have no idea what to do. They start to wake up; and Mother Nature hits the snooze button. Have to give it to the groundhogs, they got it right this year.

We jut got a solid sheet of freezing rain turned to ice, followed by 2 inches of sleet and snow. I don't know how my figs are going to handle this. This sure does not feel like zone 7 in March, our normal high on March 3rd is 68F, today was 23F!

Man, I just have to spread some sunshine on this thread.  You guys sound miserable!  You're all more than welcome to come out and hang out here.

i can use some down time there... with a keg or two of Guinness...

All out of the Guinness.  But I do have a couple cases of Kona Longboard and Big Wave.
Popping one right now...
Aloha, all around...

FiggieFiveO that looks wonderful , just in house now done shoveling snow meh only 3 inches or so.
Question how come such Paradise is void of people in those pictures?

people are like figs.. it's off season :)

Pete offseason here i run the model trains like this morning.
One day we will be in a Paradise when the ole Mrs. max's her pension and retires.
Then the fun begins.

So those quotation marks around the word "snow" in the topic title maybe mislead a little bit... almost sounds like you're referring to some other white powder.
