OT - Anybody got an electric digital smoker?

Good day, every Christmas, I give myself one present to put under the tree.  This year I chose, an electric digital smoker.  The one I got is made by Masterbuilt.  Over the past 4 months I've been researching and reading reviews online between the 30 inch and the 40 inch.  I also went to Lowe's and played around with the 30 inch ones with the glass door.  Online folks were saying the glass was a complete waste.  Many say the 30 inches is too small.  I agree.  I really don't need a smoker.  I have an Orion Convection Grill/Cooker.  I love my Orion but there is no technology behind it.  Since I'm a techie, the digital electric smoker is right up my alley!  Here is the one I got.  I'm tempted to open it but the wife says I have to wait till Christmas!  Anyone else have one of these?  Any tips?

thanks,

It's great Dennis. I have their round model. In 2 years I have smoked a few turkeys, ribs(slabs and country), chicken, etc... Best gift to give to yourself. Mine was a retirement gift from my wife.

You should open it on Christmas Eve and prep it for a nice Christmas meal.  ;)

Dennis, be sure to consider this product for it: A-Maze-n pellet smoker. I LOVE it.
And lots of good reading and help at the forums here: http://www.smokingmeatforums.com/

I don't have that one, I have a Bradley which is also electric but it's the old-school non-digital one. You should have lots of fun with your smoker.

We have one and the food my hubby makes is slap yo mama delicious!! I especially like the vegetables. I used to hate Brussels sprouts, but they are delicious smoked.
We buy different wood chips to get different flavor notes. I bought him the whole wood chip kit from Amazon and now I'm looking for marinades. I'm just waiting for him to smoke salmon. Good luck and have fun with your smoker.

There is nothing like a smoker.  I've never used an electric one but smoked meats are amazing.  You'll never go back if the electric is half as good as the coal or wood fired ones.

Just before getting into the fig hobby I was a lot into meat and grilling,
lucky me for not getting overweight.

Lots of good info and recipes available at the Bradley smoker site as well as " Old's Place ".

Dennis,
You must open this and try it out IMMEDIATELY...(so you can tell me if should buy myself the same model for Christmas! ;-)
Cheers,
Jim

When my husband was doing competition BBQ, he tried many different kinds of smokers and the last one he got which was the only one he kept when he sold all his stuff was a Fast Eddy digital pellet cooker....I say open that thing up and get it cooking!! You can make a stunning turkey  for Christmas... smoked dressing rocks..
Also you need to learn about the bacon lattes, it is truly a thing of beauty you can wrap around anything

Gloria, you must be a hoot!  You crack me up!   I'm researching the Fast Eddy digital pellet cooker now.  I really wanna open it.  But moma says to wait.  ;(

I can't wait to smoke some lamb chops in it!

Love lamb chops, never had them smoked, keep us posted because I am going to let you test them before I give it a try. I am going to try smoked duck, love roast and fried duck.

Gloria, a bacon latte involves coffee, LOL.  Yours is a bacon lattice some call it a bacon ladder.  I believe it was invented (or maybe just popularized) for this recipe:

Same thing, I was like "huh, bacon latte?" LOL. I settled on different strokes for different folks. Some people like chocolate covered bacon, why not a bacon latte? I have tried the choco-bacon multiple times, at least now when I try it I just break off a small piece; that way I'm not stuck holding a whole piece of something I really don't want.

LOL meant to go back and correct that!!! If ever you need pellets there is (or was) someone at Black Lion that sells a nice variety of pellets. There are all sorts of cool tricks for fitting more meat in your smokers...
Beacon does make everything better but not everything makes bacon better..had the chicken friend bacon at the state fair here in SC... coming from TX where we are the kings of frying other meats as if they were chicken.... it was not an improvement... but smoked bacon...

Don't change it, Gloria, patent it before *$ does  :)

I actually have a A Maze Pellet smoker that I use on my gas grill. With one flame on low I can keep around 250 degrees, some things need lower temps but I didn't want to buy a dedicated smoker. It works great, really awesome smoked chicken and done a few beef products with it...

I have the 30 inch masterbuilt electric. I did my first smoke (boston butt) using the built-in chip tray and I just didn't get near the smoke I wanted. The Amazn pellet tray solved that. By keeping the vent on top open and pulling the chip tray out about an inch the pellets get a good draft of air and makes a nice smoke. I have used hickory and maple, and plan to try pecan and apple on some of my next smokes.

Dennis,
So, don't keep us in suspense!!!!!  Did you use the smoker?  How'd things turn out?
I'm seriously considering getting one of these now.  (I have a birthday coming up soon ;-)
Jim

Jim, I'm still enjoying the box!!!! HA! I haven't even opened it yet! And now, it's surrounded with fig trees! The trees are on wheels so I can get to it. This weekend is suppose to be rainy Friday thru Sunday. I think I'll take it out the box and put it together. The one I have is a 40 incher. Meaning it's pretty big. I can place a whole slab of ribs flat without cutting it. I like that! I'll post pics later. Thanks for asking Jim!

i would love to see pictures if you find free time Dennis.
a big slab of meat is the next best thing if i cant have figs. :-)

Dennis, fig wood make a good smoke.
"gene"

Hey Gene, let me know if you need another Tacoma Violet.  I know I gota big one somewhere outside.

Fig wood for smoke?  Hmmmmm....

I have two of these in the same size. One Masterforge and one Masterbuilt. I think they are the same company just one is private labeled. Wood chips never give the amount of smoke I like though. I use wood pellets from Traeger. They create a much more intense smoke. You do not have to wet them down like wood chips. I've done everything from Turkey to Jerky and I haven't been disappointed yet. My favorites are pulled pork and Smoked Prime Rib. Easy to use but wood chip pan could be bigger. Hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoy mine.

George
