Hi all,
I've been reading about this idea for a little over a year and I think could be useful to all of us trying to work outdoors. Having so many plants I end up with water which breeds mosquitoes. Even the greenhouse has some trouble spots unless I roll up the sides after every rain to dump the water that collects in the folds. One of the interesting things is that originally the idea didn't get much press since it was hard to figure out how to make money off of it. That has changed since I see at least one company has a patented ATSB formula.
Here is the recipe I plan on trying.
Part 1 (which I assume I could freeze)
1 part juice (mangoes, peaches or similar fruit.
10 parts water
that was simple
Part 2
Add 10% brown sugar
1% boric acid (this is what kills the bugs)
1 % lime juice
Other things you could add:
1-2 drops jasmine oil
a little yeast,
cider vinegar, wine,?
I'm guessing that the lime juice acts as a preservative,
The yeast fermentation would give off CO2 which is how female mosquitoes find you
The floral oil also attracts the little blood suckers.
What is amazing about this recipe is that the boric acid has very low toxicity.
I'm going to try the plastic bottles with a sock wick to start.
Anyway hopefully it will help reduce the numbers.
I encourage you to look up the studies on this.
It looks cheap, easy and safe.
