OT: Clove Currants

I am getting my first harvest from my clove Currant bushes, the oldest ones are now 2 years in the ground:

I have three varieties of this native N. American fruit. These are "Crandall," the only one that is commercially available. Next  year my other two varieties should produce and I will be able to compare.

These little guys have a wonderful sweet-tart taste that I think will go very good with figs in jams or pies. I am freezing all I pick this month to use with figs later in the season.

If anyone is interested in a swap, I will have a couple suckers from this bush that I could trade in the fall.

I like to let Crandall hang on the plant for a very long time beyond when they turn dark. They develope a very unique rich flavor and the tartness melows considerably.
Congrats on your berries, I really enjoy Crandall and as you mentioned it has suckers, but not so many that they are a pain..just enough to dig 2 or 3 and give them away.

I've got some of the Crandall variety, they do have a nice taste. I will have to let them overripen to see what Calvin is talking about. Another great thing to recomend this shrub is the fragrant yellow flowers, plus, it seems very drought resistant.

I had not tired letting the berries over ripen, I was worried the birds would get them. I'll have to try this.
