Im coming to the end of my home orchard project (except for a few select fig trees, heh) and would like to put in an old-fashioned Damson plum. I know that most plums need a cross pollinator and Im wondering if my existing Bruce and Chicasaw plums would fit the bill.If you have experience with this variety (Damson) Id appreciate the input. Thank you in advance...James
Blue Damson is self fertile, no pollinating partners needed.
The European varieties such as Damson will not cross pollinate with the native American plums nor with the Japanese varieties nor the Japanese-American hybrids ( I think Bruce is one, but not sure ). As above, Damson is supposed to be self fertile. I am doubtful Damson or other Euro plums will do well in FL.
Blue Damson requires 300 to 400 chill hours, I guess it depends on where in Florida, and each winters individual characterise.
Not a damson, but maybe this photo will encourage your plum quest- my plum trees went nuts this past year! This is 'Toka', a japanese/american hybrid. Great fresh, preserves, tarts, plum wine, mmmm...
I can send you some burgundy plum (Japanese) Scionwood if you have a tree to graft it to. It is a great plum which requires only 300 chill hours. It grows great here in Colorado, but will never fruit do to the low chill requirement. If likes to bloom in late March to early April here, and I still get frost and hard freezes into mid May. I have been grafting other varieties to the tree that are better performers here, and the last of the burgundy will be remover this year.
