OT - Got Calamondin? It's Marmalade time!

Good day, yesterday I got a wild hair and started moving some trees in and out of my big greenhouse. I'm dedicating my 6x8 GH to just citrus. I knew rain was coming so I pulled out all of my citrus and let Mother Nature do her thing. My verigated kumquats. Still have fruit on and so does my Meyer Lemon and my Calamondin. Calamondin was loaded so I removed 80% of the oranges. Wash them thinly sliced them for some Calamondin marmalade! Boiled them for 15 minutes, chilled in the ice box and making the marmalade tonight.

Anyone else growing Calamondin ?

I have one on the way from Raintree. So good, and I love it way better than lime. Filipino condiments, sweet and tart balance. Awesome as lemonade, dips, and Asian noodles (pancit), soups etc...

Is your Calamondin super sour?

I'm jealous.

I have a few and great looking plants with so much fruit. Out in the summer and back inside in cold NY winters. Wonderful to have fruiting oranges growing inside in winter. Friends can't believe citrus grows up here. I tried the marmalade last year and was great.

They are sour. And they have strong musky intense flavor. I have made the jam yet. I'm contemplating adding candied ginger and cardimon but can't decide .

have one growing in Colorado :) bought one from ca died... bought another from jersey city and carried it as a carryon in the airplane and still thriving

They're really good with iced tea too--great harvest!

Somehow (karma?) I killed mine. Indoors they got a nice scent though.

More! You guys are killing me with your amazing plants. First the figs then the citrus. Anyone being successful with passion fruit? Ah the wonderland of exotic fruit in the garden. Hope the weather is being kinder to all. Wishing you all an abundant and joyous harvest in 2016.

I like calamondin a lot.  I'd describe it as tart, not sour.  Here's the secret to good calamondin.  When the whole fruit turns orange, leave it on the tree.  When the whole fruit turns darker orange, leave it on the tree.  Wait for the entire calamondin to turn reddish-orange and then pick it.  They taste much better at that stage.  Never sweet, but better  :)

Guavas are easier to grow than sweet citrus and much more productive indoors under HID light.

rcantor, you have raised my curiosity by brining up Guava. Growing up in India eating all through my school days and missing them since I came to the states, I am curious to find out if they can be grown in containers in zone 7a. I always thought the guava trees were tropical and needed a plenty of sun light to even establish. Any particular variety you grow and techniques that you can recommend for zone 7a? Appreciate any information you can provide.

Hi sbmohan, there is some good info on the California Rare Fruit growers website about tropical guavas and reputable sources if I remember correctly. Guavas aren't all tropical, there are pineapple guavas, strawberry guavas and some others. I think tropical guavas are supposed to be bit harder to grow, but not impossible. I have a soft spot for tropical guavas as well and hope to grow some in pots in northest Arkansas (6b/7a), too :)! Best of luck!
