OT Grafting=Art

Sent to me by a friend, this is not only beautiful, but a great space saver. I know there is a lot of interest in grafting here, and this guy has made it an art form. I hope you enjoy seeing it.

Wow!  Very cool!  I'm sure you have seen the frankenfig posts here.  Many are doing just that by grafting many varieties onto one tree to save space and still get to enjoy various varieties of figs.

This gives me an idea.  Wonder if citrus can be grafted.  We have a Bearss lime that is strugling, and JD can't live without his margaritas.  He likes them made from real juice because he's diabetic, and I make them with splenda.  We also have what we think is a seedling grown into a big tree.  I may try grafting the lime onto the seedling........  Guess I'll  head on over to the citrus forum and see what they say.

Thanks for sharing!

Would you please post your margarita recipe?I don't like margaritas or Splenda. But, my wife loves both and she hates sugary margaritas.

Well, to avoid the sugar in triple sec, we use beer.  It's yummy and not so very sicky sweet with beer......
We make a pitcher.  Lasts a couple days  You don't have to use beer.  You could try adding OJ or something...  Wing it!!

AGAVE Nectar Version (Kinda dark for a Margarita)  I like the Splenda version best.

8 oz fresh squeezed lime juice (un-strained)
¾ C. Agave Nectar (Use light syrup, not dark).
12 oz Water
1 bottle light beer
12 oz 100% Agave Tequila

Stir and serve over ice in a salted rim glass garnished with a half slice of lime.

SPLENDA Version

8 oz fresh squeezed lime juice (un-strained)
1 C Splenda or to Taste
12 oz Water
1 bottle light beer
12 oz 100% Agave Tequila

Stir and serve over ice in a salted rim glass garnished with a half slice of lime.

That is fantastic!!!

I'm not at 40 varieties on one tree yet (YET) but I'm getting there.  My highest count so far is a Japanese plum with 14 varieties on it.  Including both Japanese and European plums, peaches, nectarines, and apricots.  My Wife lovingly refers to it as the Frankenplum.  I also have created other multi grafted trees in my yard, the closest to the Franken plum is an apple with 6 varieties.

I plan to add more next year as well, maybe in a couple years I will get to that mystical 40.

Very cool!

COGardener - where do you find scion for grafting?  I have some dwarf trees I want to graft more varieties onto.  I have pear, stonefruit (peach, plum, apricot) and apple.  Lots of places sell trees but not scion.

Thanks!

Phil,

Scion wood can be rather hard to find and most searches on the internet come up pretty empty. I trade back and forth with friends, ask local nurseries if a can buy some off of trees they have in stock that need pruning (Sometime they are ok with it sometimes they are not).  Some orchards sell their pruned wood as scions, I got some great scions from Bob Pruvis (purvisrc@msn.com) this year, everyone of the scions I got from Bob took.... then Quarter sized hail destroyed most of them....  :(.  I have also had great luck with Masonville Orchard, http://www.masonvilleorchard.com/,  Look at the bottom of the page for a scion link.

I also email orchards I find on line to see if they sell scionwood and if I can get a price and availability list..... It's a hit and miss.

Some parts of the country have scion exchanges, and there are a couple of scion exchange web sites I've seen but have yet to try.

I hope this helps at lease a little.

Scott

Thanks Scott!

No worries
