OT- Guerrilla Gardener in So. Central LA

Amem!

I'm a fan of this idea, I'd like to do this with fig trees, putting them anywhere they have a chance to grow without being uprooted. As it is now in Richmond, I have seen no tresspassing signs on a large fig tree and heard from other people with trees that all their figs are being stolen. Gotta get more figs to the people.

I light a candle on this guy's honor!

This sort of things has to be done wisely (like everything else!).
The figs in Los Angeles have no real competition. Once planted they behave like weeds spreading really fast with the bird/squirrel help. It is hard to get rid of them, and expensive. The climate is ideal and sprinklers are everywhere. Did I mention no real winter?
In my neighborhood the wild figs are almost exclusively are the only wild trees, everything else is planted.
In one year they go from a seed to a 6-8 ft tall bush.
So, no, I vote against, sorry.

Igor,
Riverbanks... Canal edges..edges of Golf courses... edges of parking lots...they are all very hamlets places for starters and people can benefit from them.

Igor, perhaps your right in an area that they can spread by seed, but here in Virginia, they can only grow beyond the area planted by suckering, or perhaps someone taking cuttings. People would be thrilled to find figs in areas like Aaron mentioned. Attracting bees might be the only objection. I'm gonna do it :)

I have yet to spot a fig tree, we have plenty of wild trees here in Delaware  - pines, oaks, maples, and on and on.  Figs have to be planted here.

Guys,
I was talking about the Mediterranian climate in Los Angeles and as much as I want people to taste and see the real figs, I strongly against planting them everywhere. Remember, we have the wasp here.
That would be irresponsible. Sheep in NZ, rabbits and goats on the Islands.. Does it ring a bell?
We already have enough of them growing wild..
All other states is a different story.

I like when he says : "Lets plant some shit"
Like many forum member here he is an inspiration for food growing.

I bleeped out a few of his words and used the video as an introduction to my garden project at school (it helps that we are located across from  a homeless shelter).  We have already done some "drive-by" plantings of fruit trees (pear, plum) in the neighborhood. And my new principal has agreed to allow me to more than double the size of our vegetable garden AND is going to allow me to plant an orchard on our school grounds. Im starting Brown Turkey, Celeste, and Green Ischia cuttings for the orchard this fall....

Now I start working on her about chickens and...highly unlikely...letting me keep a couple of beehives on the school's roof.

My favorite part of the video (paraphrased) - the gangsta with a shovel bit... priceless.

James

James,
more power to ya.
You could approach every nursery in your area and ask them to donate for your project, they will, because it's Tax deductible to their business, so no loss in that aspect.
God Bless!
