OT - Hachiya Persimmon picking time

Oh what a feeling!  Fall is my favorite time of the year!

Hachiya Persimmons!!!!!

very nice!

I have two trees, last year I had about 60, this year I will have maybe 30

No Alan, they are not overripe.  These are hard. They are ready to pick but not ready to eat.  Those dark side are sugar spots !  These were growing in full sun and are larger than tennis balls.  One weighs over a pound and will get heavier as it fully ripen. Hachiya is a astringent variety and you can only eat them when they get soft.  I also have some Honan Red persimmons.....ate 2 this morning.  These are all super sweet when they are fully ripe.

Dennis... Super! I have Hachiya as well as a few others like Tanenashi and some hybrids... The others are real good but Hachiya is far and away the Queen of persimmon as far as I am concerned. This year we had a late frost that touched the Hachiya just enough that she didn't set fruit. Came back strong all year but no fruit....

God Bless Dennis!

My chocolate season was over about a month ago. So I'm driving back a couple of days ago from my river property and I see the sign. It said "Persimmon"
I called the number and was told by the owner that there was two trees that I could pick.
When I get there the next day, I find out that I am taller than any of the two trees, but these trees were loaded. The lady said that I could pick as much as I want for $1 a pound. I did not want to over do it. So I picked less than 1/3 the crop from the first tree. I paid $10 thanked the lady and left. Apparently she does not like Persimmons and she did not want them to go to waist. I tried explaining to her how good these astringent Persimmons will taste once they ripen enough, but could not convince her.
Here's a photo of what I picked excluding some that are in the freezer.

Now, I have a new source, if I run short on Persimmons

@Sas ..... Jackpot! Wow!

Hey Tony!, I love me some Hachiya persimmons!  Looks like Sas hit the jackpot!  Those look amazing!  I see some Fuyu persimmons in that bunch!  Those can be eaten when they are hard.  Their not as rich tasting as Hachiyas but they are good.  I like to eat them when they start getting soft.  Persimmons have a lot of nutritional values, folks just don't know!

Sugura is suppose to be one of the sweetest of the Fuyu nonastringent type.  I only got one huge one on my tree this year.  That will change next year though!

Here are a few others I have planted:
Tanenashi
Suruga
Saijo
Honan Red
Fuyu
Ichi Ki Kei Jiro

How bout those persimmons!!!!!

Dennis... Love them... always have! I had a Saijo but a bad winter several years ago took it and I haven't replaced it.... yet... My Dad had a 18 ft Hachiya in his yard in Flushing, NY just outside of Manhattan. That tree produced hundreds of pounds of HUGE Hachiya each year because it was nestled in a courtway between 2 brick houses and the brickwork protected the tree from the worst winter weather and provided radiant heat too. My parents sold the house to move closer to us kids and the tree was way too big to move so the lucky buyers got a magnificent tree. They sold the house 10 years ago and the tree was still there and producing as recently as last year when I drove past the house.... Wish I had THAT tree in my yard; talk about happy, happy!

Awesome, I planted a bunch of these last year.  At what height would you start pruning these?  Can you post some pictures of your trees and some tips for growing?

Nicely ripened perssimons Dennis and Vlad.

I would like to try drying them, Can i dry any variety?

Elin. Good dry Tanenashi,Hachia, Saijo.

Hi,
Congrats on your harvest. Those are in ground trees or ? I ask, because you're a bit fanatic of pots ...
I planted a fuyu in ground last year ... talk of a turtle-grower ... I read that fuyu is known for being a slooooooow grower.
Wish I knew before. I would have chosen a bigger and more developed tree ...
Well, next year, I'll teach her my way of gardening, and that thing shall sky rocket ... Hopefully.
Of course, since the tree is small, I had no flower and no fruit this year ... There is always next year.
There are other strains that grow faster, but I don't have the space to trial them all ...

Nice photos everybody! Persimmons, especially Hachiya, are high on my list of favorite fruits--fresh or dried. Unfortunately, I had very little production on my trees this year (Hachiya with 3 other varieties top-worked onto it, a young Saijo with Ormond grafted on a couple of low branches, and Fuyu)--very few fruit, and most of it smaller than normal. Here's hoping for better crops in 2017!

Very nice!!!

Do any of you trade persimmon scion wood in winter? I'm looking to graft some new kinds on my jiro and saijo. I have all kinds of other fruit wood I can trade.
