OT: Home Depot Vermin

I try to not buy any trees at Home Depot. But, this year, a Nonpareil Almond got omitted from my bare root tree order. I saw one in a pot at Home Depot, so I got it.

I was going to plant it today, but when I pulled it out of the pot, these little nasties popped out of a hole in the bottom of the root ball. I snapped these photos of one of them and then smashed them both. No more came out of the hole, but for all I know there is a whole colony in there. I put the tree back in the pot and moved it into a quarantine area.

What the hell is it? Should I pour kerosene on the tree and torch it? I hope none of these vermin have already escaped onto my land.

[Grub2]

They are beetle grubs. If you find another you can use this key to id the beetle by looking very closely at its butt, lol. Or just say beetle grubs and call it a day ; )

That doesn't sound so bad. Maybe I should go ahead and plant the tree anyway? I never heard of beetles being a horrible problem around here.

I try to do everything pesticide free, but if there is a less-toxic poison (maybe something poisonous to grubs but not to us) I could dowse this pot with before I plant it, I think I'd feel better knowing that I'm not putting a grub farm into my soil.

i heard there is some biological thing that you can use to control the grubs.. something about milky spore or something. bought a pack, but never used. more than likely expired. for whatever reason, the beetles never came back last yr.

I have those in my yard, I have seen them under rocks. They are beetle grubs and they haven't done any damage to my yard, from what I can see.

We get those in our fire wood pile here. I haven't known them to do any damage to living trees but perhaps they do. If you like to fish they make excellent fishing bait. Usually only get one cast because the fish love them so much!

For what it's worth, the tree looks very healthy and bloomed a little over a week ago. Maybe the grubs are like little elves helping the tree grow.

They are either June bug larvae or Japanese beetle larvae.....I can't tell the difference between the two.

it they are june bug or japanese beetle, they will do damage on some trees, but usually they live fig trees alone. adults beetle loves to chew on my japanese maple and roses.

Hi,
I don't know all of your insects from other there, but it seems to be Cetonia aurata. Big rump, small head.
If it goes by big head and small rump destroy them.
On the photo, they look Big rump, small head so cetonia aurata.
Those larvae help turn the compost to normal dirt/ground .
You can meet those especially if you buy from a nursery a compost bag that is not completely mature.
Because I go by better safe than sorry, I kill the ones I see, but I don't chase them as the rodents .
So you can keep the trees and put them directly in the ground.

they love Guava trees, I hate them. Life is better without them.
