Interesting, Bob. So far, mine looks like the mother melon. I hope the taste would be the same. Does it mean it is not a hybrid?
Who knows..
Grasa, I also tried the strawberries but not the large ones but the Alpine little strawberries. They grow and produce very well all year around small very fragrant berries. I have them for two years now and love them. I think from the seed to the berry it took me about 5-6 months.
The lawn thing is a totally different question. It keeps the air temp about 10 degrees cooler every summer day so our AC runs not as hard and you actually can be outside. Yes, it is a waste of water on some level and I wouldn’t mind to stop watering the grass but the SoCal summer can be hellishly hot. Also, my lawn is not that big. I have many large trees that do not allow the sun to go through for the grass to grow.
swizzle, I should try the ethnic stores too, they sell many interesting varieties. Your Korean Melons look like the ones to get!
Rich, yes, the store bought melons are very good but the curiosity has won the battle and the barren patch is green now!
The same with nectarines, they are cheap and tasty in the season. I took a few largest seeds, put them in a fridge for a several months and they germinated in the spring 2 years ago. No fruit yet but the tree I left to grow looks beautiful and provides some shade for my figs :)
