OT: how to make oatmeal edible.

so.. i go to good amount of camping and backpacking. breakfast is usually oatmeal or pop tarts. take you pick. it's hard to swallow oatmeal without any flavor. then again, oatmeal with flavor isn't all the great either.

most of the guys will just chew on them and swallow it with bit of water even without thinking about adding boiling water.

so, how do we make oatmeal edible.

simple. variety is the spice of life.. and in what we put into our mouth. but i would rather say, "spice is what brings light to our life".

add some flavor into the oatmeal that you would enjoy.

there are two different things that will make any meal amazing. i know it's not politically correct to say next 4 words, but here they are. "bacon dripping and butter".

unlike what most people think, bacon dripping and butter is possible in camping and backpacking in late fall, winter and early spring. pack them in a ziploc bag and you are ready to go.

but, don't forget the spice of life. garlic.

everything tastes better with bacon and butter, french even has term for adding butter into cooking at end to enrich the sauce.

after nice night of drinking, i usually get some "munches". to resolve that problem, i'm having oatmeal. pinch of salt, pinch of cayenne pepper, bit of black pepper and salt.. and don't forget.. BUTTER!

Oatmeal and bacon grease makes me think of bread heels and bacon grease:

All they need is a little oatmeal and they'd be set :)

Peanut butter + oatmeal = outstanding (and nutritious)

I cook it with a little vanilla, salt and sugar, then put a couple of spoons of jelly/jam into it.  Cooking oatmeal in orange soda sucks, though.

good bread and good sauce.. grease.. any liquid that i can dip into.. dreamy.

maybe some chopped figs would go good with the oat meal

I eat oatmeal almost every morning. I smash up a banana and throw some type of dried fruit in and maybe a spoon of peanut butter.

I like it mixed with nuts and seeds a bit of cinnamon, honey and maple syrup then toasted in the oven. yep granola!

Orange soda ??????????? O.K. James I need to hear that story !

A little salt, cinnamon, sugar, butter and chopped walnuts!  The nuts seem to take the slime out of the stuff.  Oh, and cold milk!

And for lunch, Cheeseburger in Paradise!  I like it like Jimmy Buffet!

As long as we are very off topic, dried fruit of any kind works well in oatmeal. If you like milk in your oatmeal, use Nestle NIDO.  Its a whole milk powder found in the Hispanic or baby aisle of most grocery stores.   Nutriom puts out egg crystals which actually taste good and cooked in a pan used to warm up some shelf stabilized bacon can provide a high protein breakfast which can be made in about 2-3 minutes (order on line unless you have a savvy outfitter near you).  If you are a sandwich type of guy, throw the whole mess in one of the small pitas.  Even in high humidity they will survive your backpack for close to a week.

JR, there really is no story.  I drink soda like some people drink beer.  One morning, many many years ago, I was drinking a Diet Rite tangerine soda while making breakfast.  I was kind of bored with oatmeal, so instead of water I poured in the soda.  As I previously mentioned, it sucked.  I tried making oatmeal with red raspberry soda, as well.  It sucked.  Now, with the exception of when I barbeque, I keep the soda out of my food.

I eat oatmeal every morning. I put in elderberry syrup, as I've mentioned in another thread. Also coconut oil, another Alzheimer's preventative, and some raisins. I use soft boiled eggs to balance it as per the zone diet. I was fine with it till the thought of adding orange soda came up, and diet soda at that, now I may never eat oatmeal again.

I use local honey as my sweetener / flavor.  good., good for you,  good for your allergies

Key is starting out with the right oatmeal - it has to bee steel cut oats.  Much better texture and nutty taste compared to rolled oats.

Instead of cooking the oatmeal in water, my wife cooks it in apple juice, and adds cinnamon and brown sugar and a bit of cream after its cooked.

Andy

I take a bowl of cereal ( is that oatmeal ? ) every morning with warm milk - I can't drink cold when awakening or my stomach takes revenge soon . I add some walnuts and a waffle with jam on it .
Since last autumn, I started with tayberry jam - from my garden-, then gooseberry jam -from my garden- and now - because the earth is round - and since I read another thread here some days ago- I'm at fig jam - store bought -.
Yes, I'm sacrificing myself for science. I will be testing all the brands I can find - 4 so far.
For now the last one is better one because one can find bits of figskin in it - those bits are really tasty - it is called "confiture de figues viollettes" / "Jam of violet figs" .
So another unknown strain :( - and one can't even known where the figs where grown ... Our food industry is really a mess !

Maple syrup, butter and brown sugar.  The butter and syrup you can get at fast food places in little packs!  Honey in little packs too.....Add raisins if you feel a little crazy and wild.

jdsfrance, I lived in Geneva for a year about 10 years ago.  Of course the food was great.  The only time I missed American food (and that was only occasionally) is during breakfast time.  Europeans don't seem emphasize breakfast as much as Americans do or maybe it is just that breakfast in Europe tends to be lighter.  When we were there would usually have muesli with cold milk and tea.  What Americans refer to as oatmeal is rolled oats (or possibly steel cut oats) simmered for 5 minutes with milk or water.  With steel cut you have to cook much longer.  We usually eat it with a bit of brown sugar and whatever fruit we have on hand (right now it is raisons) and sometimes chopped nuts.

With a lot of sugar?

Camping one can bring maple syrup for the pancakes and to add to the oatmeal.

nice plump tomatoes, bit of garlic, basil and onion. good italian sausage grilled over wood fire. throw away the oatmeal and eat it with pasta.

Pete, are you a Cooking merit badge counselor??? :)

Add passion fruit mouse

First: Feed it to a piglet.

Second: Heat up the grill.
