Pete,

Has that cutting rooted?

  • jtp

Pick them off, just like little figlets. That way the energy goes toward roots.

well.. i would pick them off like figs. only i don't know where the flowers begin and where the leaves/branches are. but i do assume that this will drain the energy just like figs on the cuttings. when the light is good tomorrow afternoon, i'll try to do some selective targeting.

I have never had a  Ill everbearing root and I tried  3 years in a row. I took cuttings from moris alba ,they root with ease ,and grafted Ill everbearing  on the cutting and put them in the moss. I poted them today and the grafts look good but the buds have not opened yet, I bud grafted them Rex.

we'll see what happens in about 6 weeks. as long as the cutting is still alive, there's always chance. and if they don't root. oh well.

Flowers? I did not know that some kinds of fig trees take out flowers.

I must say, that is an Amazing photo tho

it's a mulberry. been reading about rooting IL Everbearing cuttings. even with rooting hormone, the chance are anywhere between 20-50%. i'm not using any rooting hormone. i'm betting on the rooting set up. 70-80% temp at around 70% RH. filtered sun light and humidity bin. still chances are slim. but i remember even 3-4 yrs ago, rooting Black Madeira and some other fig varieties were known to be very hard and more like to fail. i'm sure better protocol will be found in rooting mulberry if there are enough interests. then again, grafting is always an option. just have to find good healthy Morus alba root stock.

I find that the thicker cuttings of mulberry that are one year old has more success rooting. But you're right the chances are about 30%. I did dig up a few wild mulberry and used them as rootstock.

Pete as a note i did read that its ideal to have scion with its heel thats second season wood to root.

I had zero% success with Pakistan cuttings last season. Even air-layers were not successful. However, the air layers has a nice callus, so I potted them up when they started to go dormant, and put them in the green house. Most of them seem to have rooted over the winter. I took cuttings again this season, and didn't get around to doing anything with them for more than 2 months. In a bag in the house (65F), they have callused nicely, so I potted them up and put them in the greenhouse, and will see if they are more inclined to root.

jon, all the IL Everbearing and Pakistan had good callus. i'm hoping something will happen. but everything i read on the internet does indicate that they are not very easy to root. inside of the bin is about 75 degrees at all time with 70% RH. it's right next to the air duct so rather warm on the bottom. everything i read says mulberry will root from cutting, but at the same time they say that it's not very easy to root. most of the rooting indicates use of root hormone. so.. i guess i'll have to wait till middle of may to see what happens. just have to keep the cuttings alive till then.

edit: one thing i keep reading it that mulberry will take long time to root. typically 6 -8 weeks normal. they require warm and humid condition.

the flower has grown enough i can tell where to cut, so... off with the head.

Pete was just thinking to ask you how yours is coming along .
Thanks and look forward to more updates when you have the time in future.

Roots?

They all went in with massive callus, but no root. Too soon to see any yet near the cup. I'm giving it 2 months.

they are all in a humidity bin and only gets outside air about 5 min a day. by the time 8 weeks arrive, they will be without the dome for half a day or more.

My Persian Black cuttings are finally taking root.  Last weekend one of them had a single 2" root.  I potted it up in a clear cup and placed in a humidity bin. I hope it keeps going.

i'm still thinking about Morus nigra.. i know i'm running out of room. but i want one. i'll see how my wife response to mulberry if one of the IL Everbearing or Pakistan makes it.

SOFTwood cuttings root much easier.

sort of an update. still don't see the roots. but they are not dead either.

hardy kiwis are putting out the leaves also. i didn't use peat pot on these. saving last few for Panache. need to order some more for UCD cuttings. if i got around to it, i'll pot hardy kiwi pix later.

IEM leaves are not yet fully.. unfolded. but looks ok. last few days my plants have not seen the lights due to weather.

Pakistan looks little more happier.

Thanks for the update Pete.

Im rooting for you . lol

Not too shabby Pete.

One of my Persian Blacks.  They took a long time to root in sp moss, but I was happy to see this root showing itself through the cup last night.  The flakes on the cutting is sphagnum moss.
