Thanks, everyone. The food situation is steadily improving. There was nothing open a few days ago but the odd convenience store. The real problem was gas. Broward wasn't hit nearly as badly as Miami Dade so driving to Broward made sense if you were looking for supplies but there was nowhere to fill up. People were waiting in their cars in lines at gas stations for around two hours only to find that the gas had been sold out. This is also steadily improving, luckily. However, a new and difficult problem emerging is timely power restoration. Basically, the debris and tree removal companies and FPL (Florida Power and Light) need to coordinate times to remove the trees and the downed power lines simultaneously. This could take weeks.
Also, cell reception is spotty so idk I just hope everyone is safe.
It could be way worse and it has been way worse (Hurricanes Andrew and Wilma) but again, Miami Dade got off easy compared to other places.
If you want to donate to relief efforts for Cuba, Puerto Rico, the Islands, and the Keys, I'm hearing that the Red Cross isn't the place to put your money. If I knew anyone with decent WiFi (or if i can get to a panera or something) I could maybe be more helpful with suggestions but for now, if you're feeling charitable, do some good research to find a worthwhile organization.
