we got lucky. I don't have power, it's hot, it's dark, I'm sleeping in my truck with my mom and her husband bc they don't have power either and everyone we know is without until at least sunday but like, we're alive. I've heard that the FLA keys is devastated with early estimates of 25% of people being left without homes. I can't imagine what the West Indies and Cuba must be going through. 8 people died in a nursing home in Broward County bc the staff was using the generators to cook rather than for air conditioning.

Idk what to say other than I hope everyone affected by any of these dirty footed bald headed natural disasters recovers as quickly and as painlessly as possible.

Later this year, I'll be giving away free cuttings of I258, Smith, JHA, Galicia Negra, and some others. I haven't figured out the criteria for what will make for the kind of best candidate other than you have to promise to grow them and pay it forward. Let's keep these in the system for everyone to enjoy.

Be well, everyone.

I'm happy to hear that you are ok, Nick, and hope that you get your power restored quickly. Good luck to you and everyone affected.

Praying you are made whole ASAP!
Laura

Thanks, levar. Your post and photos remind us all how much hard work has to be done in areas affected by Harvey and Irma. Hope you have power by Sunday!

Glad for those who made it in one piece.
Our prayers for those that didn't and for speedy recovery for everyone that went through both Harvey and Irma. What will Mother Nature think of next?
Be safe around the loose branches of that monster tree.

Glad you are safe Nick...

Thanks, everyone. The food situation is steadily improving. There was nothing open a few days ago but the odd convenience store. The real problem was gas. Broward wasn't hit nearly as badly as Miami Dade so driving to Broward made sense if you were looking for supplies but there was nowhere to fill up. People were waiting in their cars in lines at gas stations for around two hours only to find that the gas had been sold out. This is also steadily improving, luckily. However, a new and difficult problem emerging is timely power restoration. Basically, the debris and tree removal companies and FPL (Florida Power and Light) need to coordinate times to remove the trees and the downed power lines simultaneously. This could take weeks.

Also, cell reception is spotty so idk I just hope everyone is safe.

It could be way worse and it has been way worse (Hurricanes Andrew and Wilma) but again, Miami Dade got off easy compared to other places.

If you want to donate to relief efforts for Cuba, Puerto Rico, the Islands, and the Keys, I'm hearing that the Red Cross isn't the place to put your money. If I knew anyone with decent WiFi (or if i can get to a panera or something) I could maybe be more helpful with suggestions but for now, if you're feeling charitable, do some good research to find a worthwhile organization.

Mother natures fury knows no bounds... her mercy can also be just as bountiful as those that managed to dodge the bullet at the last minute can attest to. Thank goodness you and yours are safe. Prayers to all affected by these savage storms here and abroad and best wishes for a speedy recovery and return to some level of normality over the coming weeks and months. it will take many places that long to recover but human kind is a survivor species so far and folks will bounce back from this if everyone pitches in and helps...
