OT: Lamb Hass avocado...

Been looking for an avocado that'll fruit during the winter months and the lamb hass looks to be the winner.
Can anyone give me more info on this variety...
Hass is our favorite avocado, I have a 3 year old tree in ground.

I have done some research on this Avocado, but I have not direct experience.  Supposedly it is higher yield than Hass with a larger fruit when young . Fruit quality is similar and the tree is more compact.  It looks like a great way to extend your Avocado production.

I have had a difficult time finding it locally.  It is currently out of stock at Four Winds, but they have carried it in the past.

The Lamb Hass was developed just down the road from me. Local growers know about it, but they prefer to keep growing the better known Hass variety. They consider the advantages of (slightly) smaller tree and (slightly) higher yield to be too slight to take on the unknown risks of an unknown variety.

Still, a smaller tree with higher yield - both desirable qualities - make the Lamb Hass attractive for the back yard grower. But if you already have a Hass, why plant another tree so similar? I would be inclined to plant one of the B types and enjoy the improved yield on both trees that will arise from cross pollination.

Hey Shawn. I was at a home and garden show this past weekend in Anaheim and Cal Tropical Fruit Tree Nursery had a booth there. Don't remember the name of the lady I spoke to but she had a couple Lamb Hass in 15gal pots for $85 but it was too big to stuff in the car. If I didn't have the wife and baby with me I would've stuffed that and a couple other trees in the car!!! Anyways, they're out of Vista, not too far from you I'm guessing. tropicalfruittrees.com. look'em up...

Blake, I see your point in different varieties but out here it seems everyone has an avocado but there is nothing like Hass for me, followed by Fuerte, which I have access to at my parents house down the street. That and my limited space is why I'm sticking to what's good, plus with so many knowns and unkowns around here, cross pollination isn't an issue...

Look up Kona Sharwil and Jan Boyce.  You may change your opinion about Haas.  They are premium designer avos and hard to find.  I got both varieties recently at Atkins Nursery in Fallbrook.  They have a website and you can call and reserve a tree.  They are $25.00 each.  Small trees, but nicely priced for these rare ones.

Shawn great avatar!  I agree on the Kona Sharwill.  It will hold a long time on the tree, even longer than Hass.  I have a grafted one on CLONAL salt tolerant Israeli rootstock I can sell you in a 5 gallon pot.  Send me a PM if interested.  I'm in San Diego.  The wife said no more avocados!

Thanks for the tip Simon.  I appreciate the lead.

No prob Shawn...
Thanks for the info Suzi and Padsfan....
