Mango & key lime ice cream! Sounds and looks good! Recipe?

@Ben. Thanks for the invitation. Does Nam Doc Mai ripen into July? If so, your doorbell will be ringing next month. I think two up to four of the trees are Haden (but different sun, soil, rain, etc. produces a different size and taste), and two trees that are different than Haden, TBD, and good!

@Bass, my tree is about 15ft high and same wide, planted it in spring of 2006 from 3 gallon pot, was a county tree giveaway, I got two mango's, the NumDonMai and Carrie. I am thinking of replacing Carrie with a Haden... its a lot of work, maybe if I feel energized this fall...

@JD, the NumDocMai ripen in late May and June, there are just a few left on tree now and they'll be gone in a week. They ripen same time as Hadens. So when you come down next year let me know.

@Martin, don't know if you've ever tried a tree ripe quality mango, but I'll accomodate you if you want to try, PM me your address and I'll send you a couple... unfortunately not that many left.

I am not spraying and all of my fruit was full of worms this year.  Hailstorms knocked a lot of fruit off ... the rest was full of worms or attached by some outside muncher.

My apples all dropped. They were deformed and had black divots. I did much better last year hand-pollinating with a wild crabapple tree.

hei guys, I crack up at the description on durian taste. When I was in Malaysia recently, the durian smells like cat poop & they were selling at $17 a kilo. There are many varieties and it is Asia's king of fruits. I don't fancy them as much as figs & mangoes.

One of my work colleagues [from India] swears the best tasting mango is the "Alphonso", which was named after Afonso de Albuquerque, a Portuguese explorer and nobleman

Paully, that's the NICEST description I have heard about the durian smell...they won't even allow it on Singapore public transit:

In India mango gets pickled.

We buy it in liter sized jars at the ethnic food stores.

It is mixed with vinegar, lots of curry and other spices. We add tomatoes and olives with it.

Goes good with meats.

Hi Ben in So Fla
yes i have had them off tree many years ago when dad was alive living in Florida.
I had asked dad what those were out back on tree and laying on the thick bladed grass that i also first saw there.
He gave me knife and said go peel and eat one. Little did i know i peeled it and took big bite and realized it had one huge seed as he watched .
He always enjoyed doing these things without much explanation to see a reaction just like the time he brought home horse meat from the club and made Braciole's and afterwards asked how i liked it.
Ah the good ole days.
But thanks anyways .   ; )

You guys are killing me!

I'm stuffed from Dinner and all I want is a mango and some Indian food.

Paully do you guys have Mangosteens in Malaysia?Mangosteens are one of my favorite tasting fruits.

mango pickle ftw.  granted, i really really like mixed pickle more than anything, but mango pickle (if you can find it) is great.

Jason,

If there are any ( long shot ) Mideastern ethnic food stores in your area then you will find it.

If not, I will bring you a couple jars the next time I swing by the area.

I order everything online - usually from Amazon.  Mother's and Patak's are two of my preferred brands, but nothing beats going to a restaurant where they make their own mixed pickle (or other pickle) in-house.

I love Indian foodThe only food I think I may love more than Indian is Ethiopian - something about injera and stewed meats is like heaven to me.  It's a shame more people don't seem to like either, I usually need to hunt high and low to find anyone who will go out to eat with me, I often find myself not going because I loathe eating alone.

Don't get me wrong - I love southern food also, I grew up eating Cajun and southern, because that's my heritage.  There's just something special about the cuisines of countries that border the Indian Ocean.  So many layers of flavor, spicy, well-seasoned and full of heart, often the cheapest foods you can find.

@rob0520  --  Lots of mangosteen trees in Malaysia & the fruits are found in most fruit stands/supermarkets. A tree ripen mangosteen is refreshing & delicious. I believe there are mangosteen trees in Florida.

@paulandirene  --  At one time I just could not stand the smell of durians. The Malaysian durian smell is very strong. Those we see in Canada are mainly from Thailand & they don't seem to have that pungent smell. I remember one of my USA cousin went visiting  relatives in Malaysia and her husband had difficulties breathing in the car as the smell from the durians in the boot was too over-powering. He had to almost stick his head out to get fresh air. Ended up having to swap cars.

Jason,

If you weren't 180 miles south, I'd go eat with you.  I have the same problem.  I do like Mexican best, but Indian and Ethiopian I both like, and can never get anyone to go with me.  I do have one friend in the music business that plays the sitar in a Indian Restaurant every Thursday.  A bald headed aging rocker white guy playing sitar in an Indian restaurant.  I can't get my wife or daughter to go.

I was just introduced to the wonders of Mango.  Tried it before here and couldn't say much good about it.  I have liked it dried for many years especially sprinkled with chili powder.  And I'll never go with mango salsa - those two words shouldn't go together.  Until a couple of months ago on a Mission trip to Honduras, I had never tasted a ripe mango.  WOW.  Tried fresh around here several times since, but can't get that taste.  And of course the fibers.  I've been able to get the "normal" green/red type and also the golden type once.  They were bunches better.

if Thievery Corporation can play sitar, why not your aging rocker?  those guys are aging rockers too.

i love southwestern and authentic mexican also.  Rick Bayless is one of my favorite chefs of all time.  i like the americana-mex you find all over the states also.

on the topic of dried chili mango, if you have a Trader Joe's store, they have the best chili lime mango strips ever!

Hopefully his food is better than his brother's annoying commentary.

Bingo!  They came to town about 3 years ago.  I go there much more often than I go to Whole Paycheck!  Only place I can find the chili mango.

Growing up in Texas and in a family of 3 kids, Tex-mex was on the table the majority of the time - quick and cheap.  We celebrated the purchase of a microwave (one of the first in SA) - because of it's speed of making nachos!  But I also like Mexican cuisine.  I'm partial to the mainline Central Mexican fare, but also like the Veracruz fish dishes but also enjoy the Oaxacan moles (my wife doesn't though) and other fare.  When I first moved to Nashville there were only 2 Mexican restaurants.  An El Chico (still open) and a local (not open anymore but very good).  As the years went by, we got more Mex. restaurants, but they really butchered it up, until about 15 years ago with the influx of latinos.  Now we have a few very good restaurant and quite a few of the "speedy gonzales" type restaurants.

As a kid, we used to vacation up in New Mexico quiite a bit.  Actully used to camp in the area now burning up with the current forest fire near Los Alamos.  Dad's best friend from HS was a part time park ranger in the forests around Los Alamos.  Really fell into liking the green chili cuisine found in New Mexico.  Had a NM style restaurant here - but they butchered it up putting raisins and other fruit into everything.  Wish we had a good NM restaurant here.  Like Nashville has never heard of a Hatch Chili.

I think I would like Rick Bayless, - however, his show is not carried here in Nashville as far as I can tell.  I've been on his restaurant website and perused his menu a time or two - and I think it and me would get along very well - except maybe for the prices although they aren't too bad.

What would you expect from a sports writer that graduated from Vanderbilt?  With all due respect for the Vandy Baseball team that just went to the College World Series - Vanderbilt is not a sports powerhouse.  A joke within the SEC.

LOL

Too early this morning so no pics ( I get up at 4:30 - gotta get my day going!)

Found a Champagne Mango I bought probably 3 weeks ago.  I put it in the frig and promptly forgot about it. Found it this morning all soft and shriveled.  Decided what the heck - I'll try it - Mikey will eat anything.  Peeled it, cut off the filets and cubed it and slipped onto the tongue.  About fell on my knees - incredible experience - the taste, the texture, the sweetness.  Gobbled it up and yes did save some for my wife.  I don't know if I was just lucky - but I'm going to try that forget about them in the frig trick again and again.

i am with george on that one - love the taste - hate the fibers in the teeth

but the wife love it....(so was going crazy on them while she was pregnant for soem weird reason)
will be in south beach florida next week so surly will consume lots of exotic fruits that will go well in my drinks!

Ataulfo is my favorite mango, no fibers in the teeth.
