OT - Moringa

Grows very fast and strong
This young tree is less than 60 days from seed , about 40" tall and is growing 1" every day
Wonder what could be done to have figs to grow like that... (even the wild ones)

Moringa are nice looking trees, and a super food.  I've got a few in pots, but they're not growing that fast.  Didn't want to plant in the ground because they have to be over-wintered inside.  Looking at yours mine might not be growing as fast as they could, even in the pots, because I don't have the root buried deep enough.  Will fix that.  Thanks for the picture.

Morninga is a staple in South Indian diet. There is a saying in Tamil that translates, "one can run a household of you have a Moringa tree and a cow". I grow mine in 30 gallon pots. We harvest the greens once every week.

This tree is very resilient and a fast grower. I use the leaves as an amino acid, multivitamin, and growth promoter for my figs.

Francisco, i never heard of moringa before but from what i read, its an amazing tree with many, many great benefits! How big does it grow? Where can i buy one?

Moringa is sort of and called ...  Miracle Tree
The full plant is a complete,  diverse source of most of the vitamins , nutrients and protein we need.
Search YouTube for very interesting commentary and reports

Meg,
Find just one or two seeds and plant in ground on its final destination
Dig a small hole and fill wit a good potting media, irrigate and protecting from direct sun
Once germinated it will grow very fast and once grown up to 10 12 inch, gradually expose  to full sun.
Believe it will be easy to find seeds in the US.. Got mine from Southern Africa.
If given the space it needs it gows up to very big tree

Thanks for the info, Lampo.  I also knew nothing about this tree until now but am intrigued.  I wonder if it grows fast enough to grow as an annual in cooler areas?  From the ebay description it sounds like it could also be possible to cut it down near to ground level in the Fall and cover really well well with mulch.  It should then grow back from ground level next Spring.  Has anyone tried this in zone 7?

I live in Charlotte, NC and I grow my trees in large pots. The trees will suffer if the temps consistently get below 40 degrees for more than a couple of hours. They may have to be wintered inside the house where there is good light. These trees are tropical and I have not seen them go dormant.

There are many growers of this plant in Florida and A plenty of sellers of Moringa seeds online. I got mine from a website called ilovemoringa.com. Their sees are great and germinate well.

It seems that both leaves & seeds are edible. How do YOU like to eat the leaves/seeds?

The tender leaves can be eaten like salad. The older leaves put in soups when everything else is cooked to preserve nutrients. They can be shade dried and blended into powder to put into anything. Best to remove leaves from stem before drying. Tastes slightly spicy. Be careful with the seeds as it can cause stomach and other issues. If you think you might be pregnant or are pregnant, best to avoid moringa because it can cause contractions.

Dan's advice is good!

Mrs does mix a teaspoon of moringa green powder from the dry leaves every morning with fresh cheese to smear on her 'tartinettes'  with a few soaked lint seeds
Occasionally  also mixes fresh healthy green leaves on green salads and soups

she loves to follow a rec commendation from her gr/ grand mother to consume
salads and soups to include ''beldroega'' (’portulaca oleracea’)- a local herb- and adding a few green leaves of moringa

In Africa and Asia families grow moringa in short rows and once developed to a manageable height they keep pruning it continuously taking plenty of tender branches for consumption and the tree keeps  growing fast with new replacement shoots practically t non-stop...

Oh that sounds so deliscious! So do the leaves taste good in any soup & in any salad or do you find only in some dishes?

Up to your taste, but I usually add it in to anything I want a little zing of spiciness. Not as strong as horse radish or red peppers and is nutritious. The first few times I ate the fresh shoots I experienced a bit of clarity like drinking coffee in the morning but not as strong and smoother. Not sure the effect was because I  was nutritionally deficient and stressed out or something else.

I second Lampo's comments. They are vigorous and regrow well once chopped. Southeast Asians and some Hawaiians put them into their food for nutrition and variety. For more, youtube Moringa and you'll find loads of examples.

When I have time, I'll take and upload some photos.
