OT - Mulberry Question

About a month ago I received 2 oscar mulberry cuttings. One I placed in the ground, and the other is in a 440z cup. The cutting outside has no visible change, but the one inside is starting to leaf out. I think it has mulberries on it already. I am assuming I need to pull those off as I would with little figs. No sign of roots yet, though! Just snap em off?

yeah, snap them off. They would siphon too much energy from the cutting at this point.

Mulberry cuttings are kinda tough to root.  They love to leaf out and make new berries, but then everything shrivels.  Last year I got around 14 FRESH cuttings from a dude about an hour or two from here.  We went to his place, and he pruned the cuttings in front of our eyes.  They immediately went into a bucket of water, and the next day got planted in-ground on a drip system.  One got put into a pot.  It looked really happy like yours.  Then it withered.  The ones in ground all showed promise, then one by one, they withered.  One on the end took it's time.  That one rooted for sure.  It's now 4' taller than it was and covered with leaves and new berries.  The one on the other end was really slow, but a couple months after the first rooted one took, it began to grow and it's still lagging, but showing life again.  The rest are def. dead!  EXCEPT for one.  It's probably dead, but could it stay in ground an entire year and finally do something?  It's got a little fuzz on it's buds and they look kinda pale green.  Probably wishful thinking, but I hope it comes around and roots.  JD can't figure out why I care.  "What will we do with it?"  I shrug.  I'll gift it to a local here who can pick it up.  He was OK with that.  IF it lives!  Doubtful after a year of looking dead...........

Gene - thanks for the advice. They are gone now :)

Suzi - I have read in this forum that they can be hard to root. :( I did scrape away some bark and apply a rooting hormone. I will let you know if I have any luck.

I'm happy to report that it appears this Oscar Mulberry is rooting! :)

That's a nice lookin root!

Last summer, I made several very large air layers on my Pakistan Mulberry. Each one was at least four feet long and they all took off. I really only need one mulberry tree and I already have three in the ground. If anybody in northern San Diego County area wants to trade a Pakistan Mulberry tree for some fig cuttings (or anything else), hit me up before I go plant them in some empty lot.

Congratulations on your rooting success!  Since mine went right into the ground, no way to know.  Nice to see the roots in the cup!

My trees grew for a year in ground, so this is the year of the Pakistan Mulberry fruit!  Lots of fruit on my trees.  Not sure when it gets ripe in my climate.  I have two trees for sure.  One other could still do something, and if it does, I'll do what cyberfarmer is doing.  Gift it or plant it far from here.

I had 2 cuttings. The one in the ground outside looks the same as the day I planted it weeks ago. The one inside has come a long way. I'm still hoping the one outside will do something, if not I will put this one in its place.
