OT my first ripe persimmon

Yum!

persimmon_31.jpg

Looks good.  What's the variety?

Is that an astringent type of persimmon? I have 4 different varieties 2 astringent and 2 non.

It's a non astringent.  Thought it was a Fuyu but not sure since it came from TyTy three years ago and it doesn't quite look like the Fuyu I have gotten at Wal Mart. Have waited for this for three years lol.  Two seeds in this one but they don't look good. It's delicious whatever it may be and the air layers did not work.

They are easy to graft.

Been itching to try grafting.  Never done it yet but have been looking around some. :)

Oh Charlie, I am embarrassed to say that I got all of mine from TyTy, so I am like you, I have no clue and I am sure that they have no clue either.

Can I take cuttings from this tree after it goes dormant and use them to graft onto dormant natives?

It looks like the Fuyu's I've seen.

You beat me.  My persimmons are just starting to color up.

That's a bummer but they are very good so I'm happy.  Thought they would be more firm when ripe but this one is soft on the bottom and the top is somewhat firm.

Supposed to be getting a fairly large Hachiya this fall. Not from TyTy.

It might be an imoto fuyu, I just planted one in my yard a few weeks ago.

a must have tree. love all three stages of the persimmons. when it first starts to ripen it taste like a pumpkin to me. hard to stop eatting them when you start.

Persimmons and paw paws .. Our next big adventure...

Funny, I'm thinking of putting Persimmons, PawPaws, and Poms in!

Luv my Kaki simmons have about 20 cultivars but most are pre-fruiting age. Should have several ripening , but not for another month or 2, Did Get to eat some native ones already though.

Yes you can but most grafted on east coast are on our native Persimmon Diospyros virginiana. Seems like lots of west coast trees on Lotus.

Looks good just planted my first this spring so have a while to wait yet.  I have 3 varieties.  Plan to collect some seed from wild this fall and try to  grow some root stock to graft too.

Persimmons is one of my favorites. Ever since I was a kid someone in my family had persimmon trees. I planted my own about 2 yrs ago and this will be my first season eating them from my tree. I have fuyu. I like the astringent kind also but prefer non astringent.

You won't find Diospyros Virginiana in California, and nobody will ship it here. There are also several varieties of both astringent and non-astringent Asian persimmons (I long for Nikita's Gift) that we cannot get in California. I have germinated Virginiana seeds with the intention to graft Asian fruit stock onto it, but I have had no success in getting a seedling to survive.

Pete that's a nice tree.  Should have staked mine.

Get a Saijo and prepare to lose your mind in deliciousness....

Persimmons, Check. Poms, Check, Pawpaw...soon to be ..

Pete, that tree looks amazing!  Great work!

if anyone has any non astringent persimmon cuttings they are willing to part with please let me know. Charlie yes you can graft them on to common persimmon. In places like cali they do better on d. lotus but in the southeast they do well on D.virginiana. I just gathered over 100 D.virginiana-S seeds today. I need a male with 60-chromosomes to pollinate my newly aquired 90's so I figured I'd let a few grow out and use the others to graft both american and asian persimmons to spring 2016. I'm already getting 100 D.virginiana 2-3ft whips this spring for grafting purposes but I wasn't sure if they was D.virginiana-L or D.virginiana-S so I got the seeds today mainly for a male. I know, I know who needs 100 persimmon rootstocks but thats how they sell them where I shop the good thing is they are only 2 bucks each and the 1-2ft are only a dollar each.  If anyone want some 60 chromosome D.virginiana-S seeds for trade or postage please let me know I'll have a few extra I can share.
