Nice photo's Vladis!

Sas I couldn't wait for mine to fully ripen and have nearly eaten all of them already.

Daniel I sent you a pm on the cuttings.

Highly recommend anybody who gets one of these Asian varieties to stake it up with a stout support pole.  My poor tree has a pretty severe bend at the base from winds and fruit weight of this year.  A lower side limb is now the top.  Going to do some pruning when it goes dormant and try to get it growing "up" again.

I'm planning on getting a persimmon next year...does anyone have suggestions for Zone 6? I've only ever had them from the store, so I wouldn't know what variety to get from the catalogs (I'm thinking non-astringent to start with, I doubt my wife would like astringent types though I like them).

I'd prefer on D. virginiana rootstock, Edible Landscaping is the only place I'm aware of that sells them. Not a dealbreaker though.

I ordered 3 Paws Paws and a Saijo persimmon from Stark Bros. for our house here in North New Jersey. They are due sometime in November. I wish I had ordered that Asian Pear too. A local forum member gave me one that he grew locally and it was GREAT. Next year maybe in spring.

Seriously jealous....nice work

Dennis what variety is that? I've heard big things come in small packages:)

Man, I want that piece of fruit! Very nice! I have a small Fuyu that had 20 or so fruit on it but squirrels (I'm assuming) stripped them all one day.

Got some Haychias from a neighbor....have to let them get really ripe though...

It's Fuyu....that bowl weighed 6lbs of fruit.

My tree is a little over 9 feet tall.  I have a Sajio and Haychia planted adjacent to my Fuyu.  Sajio an Haychia is much smaller and younger than my Fuyu.  All 3 survived temps down to 5 degrees last year.  Hope this year is a mild one!

I have wild native persimmons which I like very much, once I determined when and how to harvest them so there was no astringency left. I poke the tree daily with my finger and whatever falls is good.

I'd been looking into larger astringent types since they are supposed to be more flavorful and sweet than the non-astringent varieties when I found info on the chocolate flesh types including these two lesser known chocolate types:

Maru "cinnamon spice"

Amagaki Hyakume "sugar"

I read something about them being difficult to work with or the fruit not being very good in some cases.

Any experience?

Has anyone found other types to be better all around than chocolate?

Just picked up a Yamato Hyakume.

I have a small imoto fuyu on d. Virginiana here in zone 6. Can I protect itthe same way as I would with figs? I was planning on adding extra mulch and piling up some leaves on top. any suggestions?

I saw in various sources that perssimons can be propagated by taking "root cuttings".

does anyone have any experience doing this?

Vladis i know , i will graft on these after a good variety.
As i saw i need few 3-4cm root cuttins and sucess rate is 50% to sustain them.

Hi,
A neighbor planted a kaki/persimon .
The tree got top killed in February 2012, and the tree resprouted from the bottom trunk - that is under the graft.
So having an hardy root-stock is good, but the grafted portion needs as well to be adapted to your zone.
That tree did make no fruit since it was top killed ... I'm curious to know what the fruits of the root-stock will look like.
Kaki need to be protected just like fig trees in Zone7 .
I've been thinking about planting a kaki, but those trees seem to be too big/high for my small garden ...
I'll wait a bit, perhaps a more compact and productive strain will appear in some years...

Found a very informative video about Japan and persimmons:

I plan to add Saijo, Maru, and Hachiya.

My space is limited also. I'm considering placing them in a row to espalier.

Willis Orchards lists a foot note on maru being available but they said they have none this year.

I picked a few less ripe astringent native persimmons to freeze and thaw, to test the effectiveness for removing the tannins.

What is the best way to support the branches and keep the tree looking great?

I picked a couple this morning. They need more time.
