JoAnn,
We Catholics often look to the Saints during times of trouble for intercession on our behalf.
Reading about your Mom, I am reminded of the story of St. Rita of Cascia who, during a difficult illness near the end of her life, asked a cousin for the impossible: to go to her family garden in the dead of winter and pick her two figs. Going there, the cousin found a dormant tree, but one with two ripe figs upon it, just as Rita has predicted. Since that moment, people especially those of us who are of either Italian or Latino heritage, look to St. Rita for intercession on their behalf during times of great or impossible difficulty.
I will do so for you and your Mom.
Joe
