OT Persimmon Scion Request

Received three new persimmon trees in the last couple of weeks to add along with Fuyu, my three year old resident...

There are also abundant native persimmon trees everywhere here I could do some grafting with.

A few pieces of scion from these trees are already going out to one forum member.  All I can spare from them, being small so I have no persimmon scion trade material this year.

So if anyone has extra scion wood of different varieties they would sell or give me, please let me know.  There may be a fig or two I could trade if applicable.

Thanks!

Charlie, have you checked this place out? They have a lot of different varieties if you don't have any luck here.

Yes thanks.  I could go crazy on that and likely will unless .  Would rather give somebody here the $ for theirs if anybody wants to sell some.  Free is even better so not to offend any potential gifters, I will gladly accept any scion gifts! :)

I guess I read every grafting article and watched every video online.  Even converted an old pocket knife blade into a grafting blade.  Practiced on blackberry vines and a couple of red maple limbs.  Ready to graft lol.

Good luck! I'm just trying out persimmons now. Try asking on GW as well, lots of persimmon growers over there.

Ordering a non-astringent from EL soon and going to try growing out D. virginiana seeds and graft over good Kaki varieties in a couple years. Seems like a fun project to me.

Have you seen this article on grafting persimmons? http://www.qdma.com/uploads/pdf/Grafting-Persimmons.pdf The best I've encountered so far.

Grafting persimmons does seem to be a bit trickier than other trees, I chip-budded a couple here at my place in the late summer and they didn't take.  I'm growing seedlings out that I either started from seeds or ordered from Oikos, and I plan on top-working them as they grow.  BTW, Oikos is a good source for interesting seed-grown trees and plants(but no figs) at a reasonable price.  Nice video from them about their persimmons on youtube.

Yes thanks Kelby.  Bark grafting seems the way to go.  There's many native persimmon trees here to play with.  I could be the ninja grafter and some day people would just start noticing these huge persimmons growing out in the pasture. :)

Thanks.  They say spring is the time to do it so I still have a few months.

Charlie,

PM me. I am sure I can get you some scion. Persimmon is not hard to graft I use a simple bark graft most times similar to that Kelby linked. I seem to have better results doing later than say apples. pears.  Just about when bud swells works good for me.  Critical to rub all shoots from the stock or they will zap the energy to scion.

Reply to my email about their persimmon scion...

"Charles

The only persimmoin I have listed for scion wood or on the Scion wood persimmon page and think not one of them are Kaki

At minus -11 degree F  our 300 kakis froze out last winter and I have only Virginiana and 253 cultivars perished due to the cold

Any question please ask I should be able to help you

Thank you

Cliff"

I have a Chocolate kaki persimmon, if you want. It produces male and female flowers.
The tree is 3 years old and the twigs approx pencil thick or less.
I have not trimmed the tree yet.

Yes I want!  PM sent. Thanks :)

I have gathered and separated approx. 2,500 native persimmon seeds from fallen fruits which are now in the fridge.  These will be planted in spring for future rootstock.  Been reading up on all the requirements and methods for persimmon seed germination.  Hope to get at least a few hundred.  Probably could share a few of these if anybody has a need.

I got some scion wood available, contact me if interested.

I could grab a bunch of cuttings of my Tanenashi tree for scion wood if you would like. PM me if interested

I have a mature "giant fuyu" tree in the yard.  Pm me if you are interested, and you'll need to tell me what to do as I have never made any cuttings before.

I'll be doing that this spring too! Well, not 2500. More than 20 or 30. I already put some in pots and buried the pots outside under mulch and leaves for natural stratification. The rest I'll pot up in spring or allow to germinate in the fridge in some peat moss.

Charlie. It you get more seedlings than you want I would like to buy some.

Never started any persimmon seeds so we'll see how it goes.  Will sure keep you in mind Hershell.

Charlie, regarding the seeds, commercial growers plant them out in fall and in spring they start growing on their own. You will need to stratify them in a moist ziplock in a cold storage or a fridge, just an fyi.
