OT - playing with my new refractometer

I just got home from two weeks out of country, and my plants all look GREAT. I'll post some fig pics later, but first I wanted to mention how much I have enjoyed playing with my new refractometer. This morning I tested some blackberries and raspberries.

My blackberries ranged from 11-14, and the ones that were 13-14 were wow! Really good, and really much better than the ones testing 11-12.

My raspberries ranged from 10-12, with one at 13. And again, even 1 or 2 points difference was hugely noticeable. The raspberry that measured 13 was much better than the several at 10-11.

I can't want to test lots of other things in the yard, esp figs! It was a well-spent $30, just as another dimension of the hobby.

We have a new one too.  You have inspired me to read the directions and try it out.  In about 5 years, our in ground trees should be bearing enough for us to make fig wine.  I'm hoping for high brix readings.

Sounds like you got a great price on your refractometer.  I paid over $100 for an old German used one.

It will be interesting to see how you measure the brix on your figs.

Those are all good readings Gene, when I received this last year,

I unpacked a lesson in humility. My Tsuyataro cuke's were coming in at 4,Rattlesnake beans about the same and the OP tomato's about 4- 6.The peculiar part was all my home grown veggie's tasted much better
than what was available commercially.Later in the season I was able to bring some cuke's into the 8 range, and beans at 6.The only veggie's I brought into the excellent range was a Crinkovic Yugoslavian which hit 14 and Graffiti Cauliflower which hit 11.

This year every thing is running at about average brix,if I can get everything into the "good" range
I'll be happy with the odd excellent.

Cheer's,

Gene,
Last year when I got mine I was very disappointed it wasn't great for figs but that did not stop me from trying all manner of things.
When I joked about testing my girl friend to see if her bad mood was somehow caused by a lack of sugar she wasn't amuzed - but didn't seem mad.

Now, however I can't find the darn thing anywhere.
