OT Return to the Paw Paw Patch

Well I finally got a change to walk out to check on the Paw Paw patches growing near by.
There are numerous seedling near by as well as many suckers.
One grove seems to have done pretty well.
Here are some pictures from my walk.  Sure hope I can taste these.  There are a number of good size trees.  Easily 25-20'
When it sets fruit it seems to set clusters of 4 and I sound one with 5 on a cluster.

Very nice pictures,I hope you get to try them. By the way, there's a pawpaw festival somewhere in NC in august, I've been wanting to make it out to one for years but something always comes up...

Thanks,  I remember reading something about a festival which I would love to go to.  I may try and cage some of the fruit to keep the animals off.  I would be great to taste some varieties to compare it.  The vigor of these plants is very good.

Sharon, I'm starting 2 Paw Paw patches this week with 6 or 8 different varieties.  Remind me to show them to you when you come for the festival.

are they growing in full shade?

Dennis,

I have 5 varieties at the house
with one more hopefully coming this fall.

1. Rebecca's Gold
2. Havin's Sidewinder
3. Marie's Joy aka 166-13
4. Mammoth
5. Summer Delight

It varies by patch. Some are fully shaded other have a little dappled sunlight but I was surprised at how shady it was.

I've decide to try and move a few small plants this fall and see what happens.  Hopefully if they have nice fruit I will get to taste them and keep the seeds.  If nothing else they would make great root stock.

here are 14 that i grow:

PA Golden
Mango
Taytoo
Shenandoah
Sunflower
NC-1
Neal
Sweet Alice
Wilson
Potomac
Susqueheana
Wabash
Overleese
Rapahonock

now i have Shenandoah, Allegheny, KSU atwood, and wild seedlings
first 2 loaded with large fruit

There is a NC Paw Paw festival end of August.  Looks like August is going to be a busy month.
