OT root care for a pomegranate

Do you bare root or root prune a potted pomegranate the same way a a fig tree?

I know nothing about pomegranates but I imagine you'd have to.  I'm primarily commenting to bump the thread back to the top before it vanishes into the oblivion that is page 2.  :)

Any potted plant needs to be root pruned or eventually they go into decline.
I bare rooted these 3 late last month. They had been in #5's for 2-3 years.
I probably reduced the root ball by 2/3's.

It's done the same way as Figs though? Is there anything special to be aware off?

It's the same, remove the large woody roots and anything circling.Next time I'll wear
a long shirt and gloves, that much is for sure.Ouch.

Alan, what varieties do you grow in zone 7a. I am looking to try some pomegranate varieties. Any suggestions are hekpful.

I bare rooted my tree today. It was a tough job. The roots were not as flexible as fig roots. They were definetly knotted up and circled from smaller pots. After all the mix was gone there were not as many roots as I would have thought and nothing really thick. so I just trimmed them up and straightened then out and back in the pot.

Pomegranates are much more aggressive rooters (when grown in containers) than figs. my oldest Pom tree would be root bound in one year grown in a 25g container.

Navid.

This tree is only a few years old and it was small when I got it. It seems to grow ok. Currently it is in a 7 gallon pot. I guess I will watch it and see.
