OT - Scared the CRAP out of ME!!!

Ok, now that my nerves are back in my body, I can share a story.  A few days ago, I decided that since my trees are dormant, its a good time to up size a few suffering in their pot.  All of these trees were in Super Root pots.  For those of you who don't understand how these pots work, they are basically a thick sheet of plastic with riveted holes all around.  When not in use they lay flat like a sheet of paper.  When you want to use them, you simply just get a round base and wrap the plastic around it and secure the pot shut with either zip ties or this large plastic screw that comes with the pot.  Me, I use zip ties.  They are more secure.  Well on about my 9th or 10th pot, I cut the top zip tie, unrolled the pot then cut the second one.  When I did that this fast moving blackish creature came flying out landing in my wheel barrel.  I dropped the pot and froze....looking around to see what it was!  I did not see exactly where it went!  Man I was scared!  Startled more than anything!

Not sure what it was, I kept still and just kept looking around the wheel barrel (with my eyes) and then on to my garage floor.  Just then, my wife came around the corner with the dog and I yelled to her,  "get back in the house because some just run out of my pots and it might be a snake!"  She took off back around the corner!  After, checking my pants and calming down, I went over to my work bench and grabbed my 24" machete.  I slowly and quietly walked over to the wheel barrel and moved the pot.   The creature jumped out of the wheel barrel and on to the floor and took off running!  I took one chop with the machete and cut it in half!  The wife poked her head out of the door and yelled' "did you get it?"  I said, "yes but it's not dead!"  She slammed the door shut.  I bent down to take a closer look at this thing to see what it was and guess what it was?  A  big LIZARD!  Man I laughed so hard, again...checking my pants!

Man that dude scared the crap out of me!

Haha!  You made for a great visual, Dennis.  Glad it wasn't anything worse.  ;)

Haha! You're pretty fast to chop that lizard in half!

My dad told me once that he and his brother would adopt street dogs, take care of them, then go to the junkyard to "rat" them. He said a few of them were really good ratters. But he told me: we always made sure to tie the bottom of our pants tight at the ankles so none of the rats could run up the legs. You reminded me of that story...

Glad to know you are swift & deadly like Ninjas with their swords. A good word to put out to "thieves" -- 5 break in's since friday
in my neighbourhood. My wife shoo one away on sunday morning at approx. 2.30am. She was like 7ft away from this thief.

Am I the only one that felt bad for this lizard? LOL

Better safe than sorry, had it been a snake!

Dennis, with all the experiences that you have had with figs, you need to write a book of short stories, I would buy one.

I'd like to know how big this giant ferocious man eating lizard was?

Nice story, though, Dennis!

im glad your okay dennis

So Snaglpus, how many different varieties of poisonous lizards do you have in North Carolina?  Excuse me if I don't join in the giggles...

zero

We know where Dennis stand in the fight or flight question.... never gonna sneak into his fig orchard!!!

Hi snaglpus,
Well, try using a bucket next time and throw the bucket over the beast.
You can then identify the beast and decide while still protecting yourself.
Are you sure that lizard was not of an endangered specie ?

I'm glad I only find earthworms in my pots :) .

Note to self: Never make a surprise visit to Dennis and sneak up on him!!!

I was thinking exactly the same thing.

Pretty funny but I also feel bad for the poor lizard.  I haven't seen to many lizards here yet.  Just the little ones with the bright blue tails.

Purple-tailed skink, I think...

Hey Dennis...That would have scared me also! We have plenty of Lizards here in Alabama. We even have the kind that can change their color.....I think the real name of them is  "Green Anole"..
Anyway, thanks for the story, it was very Funny...:)

Great story! I can somewhat relate. Last year I was up-potting some desert trees and when I slid it out of the pot a big green centipede came running out. The potting mix was full of baby centipedes, too! I am very careful when messing with pots now. Scared the crap out of me!
