OT - The Deluge Of Rain, a small rant..

Will it ever end? Doesn't seem like it. We're approaching 20" over our annual average here with more rain for today! Just great.
So much stuff has been washed down the tubes this season, it isn't even funny.
This time last year I couldn't find enough people to give tomatoes to. This year I've reaped a grand total of 2, yes two, cherry tomatoes!
Our 4th of July fireworks were washed out and postponed for Labor Day....guess they'll have to do them for Halloween or something.
I wanna BBQ on my charcoal grill! I wanna work in my flower beds and get them ready for next year! I wanna play in my newly fenced yard with my rotten dawg! <pulls hair from head> Uuuuugggghhhhhhh!!!!

Ok, I feel a little better, thank you. Back to your regularly scheduled program...

Sophie, I hear ya. All that you said applies here in West Central Ga. If that has not been enough, we already have flash flooding
in the area this morning. Some place over three inches today already. I went out early and moved all the the figs that are
swelling and ripening under cover. I have had tons of tomatoes but most were split.

there was a song.. anyway.. yeah, i'm sick of rain. i need to be more proactive and start covering my pot, but i do have life outside of figs.. and like yesterday.. over an 1" of rain in span of 1 hr. took out power at biggest supermarket. my oldest and main producers are done. it's not all rain's fault either. i'm just having lousy yr. my drip line didn't work while i was away for 3 days and that also fried the leaves. oh well. there's always next yr.

The only things that are happy around here are the ducks and frogs...oh yeah, and the mosquitos too. :(

Another perspective.

It rained here yesterday - .10" that was the first rain in 36 days (.25").  We have two man made ponds/lakes, 7 acres and 3 acres, that are over 4 feet down from normal level.  The second cutting of hay will not happen, many 1 -2 horse family ranchettes will be forced to sell their pets because of the price of hay and feed.  Two years ago we were feeding the deer 200-300 lbs of corn, not so bad this year, if we get a lot of rain over the next two months the browse and graze will be okay.

Not complaining, thankful for every drop we get.

Remember the old Texas saying, "Whiskey is for drinking, water is for fighting over!!"

In Georgia it was not too long ago that Lake Lanier was almost dry

Just saying.

Danny, you are so right. Only three years ago we were rationing water and people were being fined for watering their lawns.
As I stated earlier, don't know which is worse the drought or people being flooded out of there homes and dying as
they are in parts of North Ga this year.

I feel ya, Danny.  We had a little shower this morning and boy were we thankful!  Of course, I can sympathize with y'all in NC and GA too.  Just send all your extra rain over here to TX.  =)

like everything else in life, it depends on which angle you are looking from. honest truth is, if it weren't for figs, i wouldn't careless if it rains or not. weather is one of those things i can't control.

I can certainly appreciate the flip side of the coin! I remember numerous years of drought and crops burning up in the fields. It's just discouraging to see huge trees tumbling like blocks because their root structure is so sodden it can't support itself anymore.

We had a short but terribly violent storm tear through here Sat. evening and my neighbor had part of his neighbors tree (a huge old oak) land on his roof. He was lucky that only his gutter was busted. It could have been much worse.

We hear you here Sophie. We have the same complaint.  After 3 years of drought, Lake Hartwell was down 22' last year. This year instead of the 47" annual rainfall we normally get, we are approaching 100" of rain with 3 more months to go. Like you, I lost a lot of production and probably broke a record by growing zucchini and not harvesting a single Zuc (I can hear my husband cheering in the background but I feel the same way about his lima beans).  On the other hand, the lake is full to overflowing, all of my young plantings have just about doubled in size and I have not heard a single complaint from the deer, raccoon or possum that my bumper crop of figs were too watery.  Determined to look at it from the point of view that next year all the branches will have more room on which to hang fruit :) and boy are those critters in for some surprises :)

Sophie...we just got a two hour down pour here in central N.J....could hardly see out my back window...when all was over my back yard was flodded(about 1 1/2" to 2" of rain)...went out to inspect the damage and found many of my figs that needed 2 or 3 more days of ripening time were split open and starting to sour...good thing we don't have to do this for a living !! ... hope next year will be better.   :(   :(

Feast or famine. I sure wish I could send some of this rain your way Danny. Very weird weather patterns lately

I wouldn't wish these torrential downpours on my worst enemy. :(

Major thunder and lightning all around us at this very moment.   I can SEE rain dropping to the North and to the South, but the storm is coming at us from the west, and it is blocked by Mingus mountain (just to our west). Not a drop on us yet.   We may get wet, or maybe we won't.  Just sittin back and watching the show.

A few weeks ago my county was covered by the local news coverage with washed away roads and rescue's. As challenging a season as it has been I much prefer it to Drought. If I had taken significant property damage that might change my tune, but I would rather have a ruined fruit season from rain than a loss of trees. As much newly planted tree that I have this year I probably needed this.

We've had our share of too much rain too. A few days ago, depending on location, we had 2 to 4 inches of rain. Needless to say there were flash floods, lots of roads closed, basements flooded, cars swept away and so on. Last year we were dry this year we're soggy. The only good thing out of this is I've only had to water the pots a few times in the past few weeks.
